Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) Charge is a licensed professional who uses the BSWH nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery by the healthcare team. In the capacity of Charge Nurse, the RN works in the best interests of BSWH, accepts increased responsibility, and supports and carries out BSWH’s mission and goals. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses patients, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements individualized plans of care, and evaluates patients’ responses.

The RN promotes safe passage for patients by using knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients in transitioning through the healthcare encounter without preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to healthcare personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, each patient’s condition, and the competencies of the employee. The Charge Nurse holds nurses accountable for providing appropriate care, including, where appropriate, taking disciplinary or corrective action with support from the designated manager.

Additional responsibilities include use of the Role as a Charge RN for hospital inpatient and outpatient departments with 24×7 staffing, such as GI Lab, Pain Management, Dialysis, Infusion Centers, and IV Services.

The Role
  • Clinical Judgment: Uses clinical reasoning to conduct accurate clinical assessments according to practice standards, identifies and prioritizes patient and family needs, and develops, implements, and evaluates the nursing plan of care.
  • Clinical Inquiry: Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, supports evidence‑based practice changes, and participates in quality/performance improvement initiatives.
  • Caring Practices: Creates a compassionate, supportive, safe, and therapeutic environment for patients, families, and staff; manages emotional and physical pain to promote comfort and healing.
  • Response to Diversity: Recognizes and incorporates patients’ and families’ cultural, spiritual, gender, racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and other differences into individualized care plans.
  • Advocacy and Moral Agency: Preserves confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights of patients and families; resolves ethical and clinical concerns.
  • Facilitation of Learning: Provides learning opportunities for patients, families, nursing staff, and community members; integrates appropriate education throughout the continuum of care.
  • Collaboration: Works collaboratively with colleagues and community to implement integrated care plans; delegates tasks and ensures timely follow‑up.
  • Systems Thinking: Uses resources for problem‑solving while considering safety, effectiveness, and efficiency.
  • Professionalism: Participates in shared governance, staffing processes, ongoing professional growth, and community service; provides feedback for staff development.

Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (RN)
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience as an RN
  • Certification/License: Registered Nurse (RN) and Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer
