Overview

Registered Nurse (RN) Supervisor at the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple, TX. This is a full-time hourly position eligible for overtime.

Responsibilities
  • Provide supervision, coordination, and evaluation of day-to-day nursing activities in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations (24 hours per day, 7 days per week).
  • Act as Facility Supervisor during assigned shift with 24-hour oversight for resident care and nursing staff.
  • Receive report from outgoing facility Supervisor and monitor staffing levels based on acuity for current and upcoming shifts.
  • Respond to crisis situations during the assigned shift.
  • Ensure nursing personnel comply with written policies and procedures established by the facility.
  • Review department policies, procedures, and job descriptions; make recommendations for revisions.
  • Review and update residents’ written care plans as indicated.
  • Complete and review accident/incident reports; follow up with QA Director and DON/ADON; report and investigate all allegations of resident abuse.
  • Complete daily, weekly, and monthly audits and submit to ADON/DON/QA as required.
  • Maintain the Daily Census Report and submit to Business Office or designee per facility process.
  • Make rounds to ensure resident care needs and environmental standards are met; investigate and manage problem areas and report outcomes to ADON/DON.
  • Participate in committees/programs and in the Quality Assurance process; attend QA meetings and submit required reports each month as directed by ADON/DON.
  • Communicate changes in residents’ condition to physicians, families, or responsible parties; meet with residents and/or families as necessary.
  • Attend and participate in mandated in-service trainings; maintain written record of resident grievances and actions taken; participate in facility surveys and inspections.
  • Serve as a resource for nursing staff and collaborate with ADON/DON and Staff Development to identify and provide orientation and continuing education for nursing staff.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary and perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills
  • Must possess a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university or be a graduate of an approved RN program.
  • Must possess a current, unencumbered, active RN license in the state.
  • Must possess leadership and supervisory ability with willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel; one-year prior experience in nursing management and supervision preferred.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when warranted.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, families, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of nursing and medical practices, procedures, laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to long-term care.
  • Willingness to seek and incorporate new methods and principles into nursing practices.
  • Ability to assess and relate information concerning a resident’s condition; cope with mental and emotional stress; on-call and weekend/holiday/evening/night work as required.
Required Experience
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification required prior to performing work, preferably from the American Heart Association (AHA), or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Education & Licensure
  • RN degree from an accredited program; current active RN license in Texas.

Physical Requirements
  • Work in well-lighted, ventilated areas; indoor work; moderate noise level.
  • Frequent interruptions; interaction with residents, staff, families, and outside agencies.
  • May be required to work beyond normal hours, weekends, and various shifts; possible exposure to bodily fluids and infectious materials.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; lift/move up to 50 pounds; may assist with moving equipment or residents.
  • Emotional resilience and ability to work under stress; able to relate to ill and elderly residents and maintain professionalism.
