Job Summary:
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is a licensed registered nurse with advanced specialized training in the administration of anesthesia. The CRNA administers, monitors, and adjusts anesthetic doses to individual patients, from neonatal through geriatrics, during surgery and other procedures. Limited to select locations based on unique workplace dynamics.
- Interprets physician's pre-anesthetic evaluation and lab data.
- Reviews health history, including psychosocial as well as biophysical, and reviews current laboratory data.
- Performs pre-induction examination and reviews the proposed surgery with the patient.
- Performs a brief physical assessment of the patient, dentures, prosthetic devices, allergies, and NPO status. Verifies that all prescribed safety standards (machine checklist, functional suction equipment, airway management equipment, proper placement of monitoring and electrosurgical electrodes, physical positioning) are complied with before induction of anesthesia.
- Induces and maintains general anesthesia at required and safe levels, using techniques prescribed by the assigned staff anesthesiologist or techniques typical within the department.
- Selects and administers anesthetic techniques, medications, and adjunctive drugs according to departmental guidelines.
- Performs intratracheal intubation and extubation and protects the patient at all times.
- Identifies and manages emergency situations according to departmental policies and procedures.
- Performs regional anesthesia using techniques prescribed by the assigned staff anesthesiologist or techniques commonly used within the department.
- Monitors life support functions, records data, verifies equipment is in working order, and uses all available noninvasive monitoring equipment (BP, EKG, oximeter, esophageal stethoscope, temperature, oxygen analyzer, etc.).
- Manages fluids, blood, and electrolyte loss and replacement within Department of Anesthesia policies and procedures.
- Performs perioperative diagnostic testing and documents findings in the anesthetic record. Takes corrective action for adverse drug responses and seeks timely consultation when needed. Documents all pertinent events during the procedure.
- Terminates anesthesia in a timely fashion and ensures patient safety in post-anesthetic recovery. Reverses anesthetic per departmental guidelines.
- Provides detailed handoff reports to Recovery Room staff and informs the Recovery Room Anesthesiologist of any complications. Documents post-anesthetic visits as required.
- EDUCATION - Bachelor’s degree
- EXPERIENCE - Less than 1 year of experience
- CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION - Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA); ACLS (within 30 days of hire/transfer); BLS (within 30 days of hire/transfer)
