Material Handler – 518052 – Tennessee Valley Authority – Cumberland City, TN

Job Overview

Primary responsibility to ensure materials and equipment are received, stored, and issued, including segregation of nonconformances, in accordance with applicable standards. Generate and process documents so materials are available to meet schedules.

Responsibilities
  • Perform receipt functions for all materials, including initial inspection for shipping damage, compliance with commercial requirements and documentation requirements.
  • Maintain accurate status of all assigned material activities.
  • Prepare material for release and transfer, resolve discrepancies, prepare Receipt Exception Form/nonconformance report, and perform follow-up investigation.
  • Complete automated receiving process, prevent late payments through expeditious receipt document processing.
  • Tag and mark material and storage locations, arrange storage bins, cabinets, racks, ensure proper storage, review inclusion in preventive maintenance/shelf‑life program.
  • Perform warehouse inspections, ensure material is properly stored and protected.
  • Issue material after verifying proper authorization, ensure all required information is included, may issue via storeroom requisition, MPAC, or bar code, ensure quality consistency.
  • Prepare material for shipment, ensure proper packaging, load material using proper handling techniques, ship in compliance with TVA, state and federal regulations.
  • Observe methods, procedures, processes associated with material handling work and recommend new or revised procedures.
  • Support routine performance of cyclic inventory counting, assist in root‑cause analysis, resolve inventory discrepancies, participate in sample and physical inventories.
  • Assist in identification of surplus or obsolete material, prepare documents for disposition, participate in sale of surplus material or scrap.
  • Operate material handling equipment to unload or relocate materials, operate forklifts, cranes, rigging equipment, band saws, cable cutting equipment, motor vehicles to deliver materials, operate trucks as required.
  • Assist in training and development of other employees.
  • Perform work in a safe manner, identify unsafe work conditions, initiate corrective action, participate in safety meetings.
  • Check in and assist shipping materials related to site‑specific programs such as hazardous waste, prepare manifests and GBLs, ensure shipment adheres to regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Valid high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficient in basic mathematical functions: add, subtract, multiply, divide whole numbers, percentages, fractions, averages; math test required.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions precisely.
  • Valid state driver’s license, able to operate TVA vehicles through 1-½ ton, manual and automatic transmission.
  • Forklift experience up to 5,000 lbs with palletized and large materials; large forklift experience up to 30,000 lb for Distribution Centers; experience preparing loads and estimating truck size requirements for shipping large orders.
  • Physically capable of lifting, bending, squatting, stooping, climbing stairs/ladders, walking, standing, sitting for indefinite periods; pass employment physical; able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Work any assigned shift including evenings, midnight, weekends; available to perform work assignments at any location within TVA.
  • Experience in computers and software applications such as Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook; preferred experience in TVA systems such as Maximo, Cognos, Agile.
  • Prepare required documentation: reconciliation, receiving, receipt exception; use online technology for inquiry, data entry, report requests, automated materials‑related activities using TVA materials‑related software programs.
  • Six months or greater experience in this field position.
