Building Inspector

Join the Vigo County Human Resources team as a Building Inspector for the Vigo County Building Inspection Department. Responsible for enforcing local, state, and federal building and occupancy codes.

Salary and Benefits

Annual salary: $47,065.20.

Responsibilities
  • Review construction blueprints and conduct on-site inspections before, during, and after construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, issuing permits as appropriate.
  • Investigate complaints of alleged code violations, issuing notices and negotiating resolutions, and discuss possible legal action or halting construction for unresolved violations.
  • Patrol areas and inspect structures for safety and habitability, condemning unsafe structures and inspecting demolition sites to ensure proper destruction.
  • Maintain accurate records, enter data into computer systems, and prepare reports as required.
  • Interpret building codes and disseminate information orally and in writing to contractors and the public.
  • Keep current knowledge of federal, state, and county codes through review of codes, standards, publications, and attendance at classes and seminars.
  • Supervise assigned staff in the absence of the Building Commissioner.
  • Provide phone support and respond to inquiries regarding permits and code requirements.
  • Attend state and local meetings and provide code information at seminars and advisory board meetings.
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24‑hour basis.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in a related field with knowledge of Indiana Building and plumbing codes.
  • Minimum age 21 years.
  • Ability to pass drug test and medical exam.
  • Extensive experience in construction principles, allowing determination of code compliance while reviewing plans and conducting inspections.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local building codes, including energy, pools, accessibility, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical trades.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in creating and maintaining accurate records and files.
  • Ability to supervise staff in the absence of the Building Commissioner.
  • Proficiency with standard office equipment, including computer and calculator.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, and execute oral and written instructions, presenting findings in written or oral form.
  • Effective communication with colleagues, other county departments, and the public, with sensitivity to professional ethics and diversity.
  • Compliance with all employee and department policies and work rules.
  • Work independently with minimum supervision and work effectively in a team environment, managing multiple tasks under time pressure.
  • Capability to interpret detailed prints, sketches, layouts, specifications, and maps.
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical equations and calculations.
  • Occasional extended hours and response to emergencies on a 24‑hour basis.
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
Supplemental Information

Incumbent’s duties are broad and impact many variables, requiring independent judgment in interpreting codes and applying them to varying situations. Decisions made impact builders and property owners; errors may result in litigation. Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co‑workers and the public to exchange information, negotiate problems, and explain policies. Incumbent reports directly to the Building Commissioner and performs duties in a standard office environment and outdoors, handling objects weighing less than 25 pounds, driving, and working near construction hazards.
