This is atechnical leadership rolewhere approximately
70% of yourtime is spenthands-on developingsoftware, with the remaining
30% focused online management and developing a high-performing engineering team.

Working closely withthe Head of Software, you'll remain activesoftware engineers while providing leadership, coaching and technical directionacross the engineeringfunction. This roleis ideal for experienced software engineers who enjoy mentoring others but stillwant to spendthe majority oftheir time designing, developing and reviewinghigh-quality software.

• Design, develop and maintain production-quality software as anactive member of engineering teams
• Write, review and optimise high-quality code, primarily inreal-time C
• Produce and reviewsoftware architecture,design documentation and technical proposals
• Participate in code reviews, design reviews and engineering governanceactivities
• Support engineers through technical mentoring, pairingand collaborative problem solving
• Own the quality, maintainability and delivery of software solutions
• Apply modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing and secure development
• Contribute to planning, estimation and technicaldecision making across multiple projects
• Drive consistency in engineering standards,tooling and developmentpractices

• Line manage ateam of approximatelyeight software engineers
• Conduct regular one-to-one meetings, objective setting and performance reviews
• Support career development through coaching, mentoring and development planning
• Identify training needsand help growcapability across the engineering function
• Support recruitment, onboarding and succession planning
• Work alongside theHead of Software to develop technical capability aligned tofuture business needs
• Encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration acrossengineering teams
• Contribute to continuous improvement of engineeringprocesses, standards andbest practice

• Strong background in software engineering withthe ability anddesire to remainhands-on
• Significant commercial experience developing software inC within embeddedor low-level systems
• Experience working throughout the full software development lifecycle ina product development environment
• Strong understanding ofmodern software engineeringpractices including CI/CD, code reviewand automated testing
• Ability to interprethigh-level requirement sand translate theminto practical technical solutions
• Strong communication skills with the abilityto engage technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience producing and reviewing high-quality technical documentation
• Experience supporting career progression and mentoringengineers
• Ability to build, motivate and develop high-performing engineering teams

• Experience with Goor Rust
• Experience developing modernweb applications
• Python and Bash scripting
• UI development using
  
  Qt or wx Python
• Experience with automated testing frameworks suchas Robot Frameworkor OpenHTF
• Knowledge of fuzzingand software analysistools (AFL, PRQA, Lint or equivalent)
• Experience debugging embedded systems using oscilloscopes, bench power supplies and other laboratory equipment
• Experience driving engineeringprocess improvements across multiple teams

To be eligible for this position you must:

• Hold a relevantdegree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Computer Engineering or equivalentprofessional experience, and;
• Be a Britishcitizen, and;
• Hold or be eligible for UKNational Security Vetting(NSV) at SClevel (DV desirable)
