Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field. Minimum three (3) years of payroll or accounting experience.
Preferred Education/Training/
Experience:
Master’s degree and five (5) or more years of higher education payroll experience. Advanced technical proficiency in payroll software, accounting software, and Microsoft Excel. Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills for addressing payroll discrepancies and ensuring accuracy.
- Work requires the ability to read state, federal, and local regulations.
- Ability to promote and follow Board of Trustees policies.
- Requires strong mathematical skill with ability to perform general math calculations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as various statistical calculations.
- Ability to manually calculate checks from gross to net for verification of program changes and employee questions.
- Strong organizational skills to work independently and to prioritize a heavy workload under the pressure of competing assignments.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, especially with regards to sensitive or confidential personnel or organizational matters.
- Position requires critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and meet constant deadlines.
- Work requires the ability to write reports, memos, requests, and general correspondence.
- Ability to work beyond scheduled hours when required.
- Detail‑oriented skills in proofreading materials and data entry to ensure accuracy on various reports.

- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor and wage laws, including minimum wage, overtime, and worker compensation programs.
- Process payroll to include calculating wages, deductions, bonuses, and taxes, and issuing payments via direct deposit.
- Review and analyze data provided for accuracy based on guidelines set by the college and/or legal mandates. Including but not limited to rates of pay, benefit information, retirement status, time submission, overtime, leave reporting, hourly pay, overload pay.
- Oversee accurate payments to the Employee Retirement System of Texas (ERS) for benefits administration and to all retirement vendors.
- Reconcile/audit payroll accounts and investigate and report irregularities. Maintain meticulous records of work hours, wages, deductions, and other relevant information.
- Manage General Ledger and Journal Entry processing, record keeping, and reporting.
- Review and approve Teachers Retirement System of Texas (TRS) payment processing and reporting. Analyze the employees’ work schedule to determine TRS eligibility.
