About Gundersons CFO & Bookkeeping

Gundersons CFO & Bookkeeping is a Texas-based accounting and bookkeeping firm serving small businesses and individual clients. We operate with documented processes, high standards, and an uncompromising commitment to accuracy. We are building a team that takes ownership of their work and thrives in a structured, professional environment where quality is the standard, not the goal.

The Opportunity

We are hiring a tax preparer who can manage volume, adapt to shifting priorities, and communicate clearly with clients when things get complicated. This is a full-time, in-person role at our Hempstead, TX office, handling individual (1040) and small business returns. You will work directly with walk-in clients as well as an established client base. Tax season runs hard here. You will need to be organized, self-directed, and comfortable managing a portfolio of returns while keeping quality high.

If you thrive when there is meaningful work in front of you, and you know how to prioritize without being told, this role is for you.

What You'll Do
  • Prepare individual (Form 1040) and small business tax returns (Schedule C, Form 1065, Form 1120-S)
  • Review client documents for completeness and accuracy before preparation
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and flag issues for review
  • Greet and assist walk-in clients, gather intake documents, and set expectations on turnaround time
  • Communicate with clients regarding missing documents, return status, and IRS correspondence
  • Manage extensions, deadlines, and a portfolio of active client files
  • Support resolution of IRS notices and correspondence
  • Follow firm quality control checklists and review protocols
  • Collaborate with bookkeeping staff on year-end work papers and supporting schedules
Technical Requirements
  • 2+ years of tax preparation experience covering individual and small business returns
  • Working knowledge of Form 1040 (all schedules), Schedule C, Form 1065, and Form 1120-S
  • Active, current PTIN (required before start date)
  • Proficiency with tax preparation software (Drake Tax, Pro Series, Ultra Tax, or similar)
  • Understanding of IRS e-filing procedures and extension workflow
  • Ability to manage multiple returns simultaneously during peak season
  • Working knowledge of depreciation, fixed asset schedules, and estimated tax calculations
  • Quick Books Online experience is a must
Who You Are

We use the Predictive Index (PI) behavioral assessment as part of our hiring process. Our ideal tax preparer shifts smoothly when priorities change, because they do, especially in season. You are precise without being rigid, self-directed without going dark, and confident enough to make judgment calls while knowing when to elevate. You build rapport with clients quickly, translate complicated tax situations into plain language, and do not fall apart under deadline pressure.

You take ownership of your client files from intake to filing and function well within a team structure without needing constant direction.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Enrolled Agent (EA) designation strongly preferred
  • CPA or active CPA candidate a plus
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field (or equivalent experience)
