We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Unit Counselor to join our team at Stevens Ranch Resident Camp. The Unit Counselor will be integral to creating a safe, fun, and supportive environment for campers, ensuring each child develops new skills, makes new connections, and has a memorable experience.

Job Summary

Unit Counselors further the mission of Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains (GSTOP) through Stevens Ranch Resident Camp programming. Unit Counselors are key members of the camp team, responsible for creating a safe, fun, and supportive environment for campers. Camp Counselors plan and implement activities, engage with campers, and provide day‑to‑day guidance to ensure campers develop new skills, make new connections, and have a memorable experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Must reside at Camp Sunday–Friday during the summer.
  • May work with resident campers or day campers.
  • Learns evacuation procedures.
  • Trains campers on weather safety and evacuation procedures.
  • Assists in the process of check‑in and check‑out.
  • May include assisting in the transportation of girls to and from camp.
  • Assists with girl health check‑in.
  • Communicates with parents and guardians.
  • Helps girls get settled into camp.
  • Assists in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their living unit, within activities and throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomes.
  • Applies basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
  • Assures campers are properly always supervised.
  • Consistently aware of and implements safety guidelines.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.
  • Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
  • Actively participates in all program areas as assigned.
  • Provides the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  • Assists in program areas such as waterfront, nature, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed.
  • Maintains a high standard of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  • Provides the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
  • Ensures that campers receive their medications as directed by the Health Supervisor.
  • Be alert to campers and staff needs and assists them with personal and/or health problems and discusses with your Unit Leader, Health Supervisor, and/or Resident Camp Director when appropriate.
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; reports repairs needed promptly to your Unit Leader.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Follows and upholds all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Sets a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices, including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.

Job Qualifications
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Required valid CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (will be provided if needed).
  • Commitment to the mission and purpose of Girl Scouting.
  • Must be willing to work with all persons without regard to race, religion, ethnic origin, socio‑economic status, sexual orientation, age, or disability.
  • Experience and/or education in general Outdoor Education or Girl Scouts is a plus.
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in a camp community.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines and produce results.
  • Ability to reside overnight at camp.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Verbal fluency, good grammar, and professional appearance.
