Portraits
International – Photographers of all levels are invited to submit work reflecting the theme “portraits” to A Smith Gallery. Entries of 13 or more images are eligible for a complementary review by the gallery directors.
Forty-seven images will be selected for exhibition and shown in the online gallery from February 13 to March 26, 2026.
An exhibition catalogue with all the accepted images will be available for purchase. Also, 27 of the total 47 images will be selected for “The 27”, a limited edition hardbound fine art book of the exhibition. The Juror’s and Director’s award winners will each receive a copy of the limited edition hardbound fine art book and a solo exhibition. The Visitors’ Award is $100 and is selected by the most Instagram likes.
EligibilityThe competition is open to all photographers, both professional and amateur, working in all photographic mediums and styles. International entries are welcomed.
JurorAline Smithson will be the juror for “portraits”. She is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, editor, and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California. She is best known for her conceptual portraiture and a practice that uses humor and pathos to explore the performative potential of photography. She has exhibited widely, including over 50 solo shows at a variety of international institutions, and her work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, and PDN.
Smithson is the Founder and Editor‑in‑Chief of Len scratch, a daily journal on photography. She received the Rising Star Award through the Griffin Museum of Photography for her contributions to the photographic community.
Jurors will be selecting up to 47 images in total. All artists included in the final selection of images will receive the following:
- The gallery will be featuring each of the selected images on both Facebook and Instagram over the span of the exhibition.
- Gallery Directors will be hosting a Gallery Talk and will discuss all selected images. The Gallery Talk will be posted in the blog section of the website.
- The gallery online store will include all selected images listed for sale.
- An exhibition catalogue including all selected images will be published and available for purchase.
- The online exhibition as well as the Gallery Talk will be permanently archived after the end of the exhibition period.
Twenty‑seven images from the total 47 images will be selected for “The 27”, a hardbound fine art book of the exhibition. “The 27” will be available for purchase. Both the Juror and Director Award recipients will receive the hardbound exhibition book.
AwardsThe awards are as follows:
- Juror’s Award – an online solo exhibition, “The 27” exhibition book and feature story on the gallery blog
- Director’s Award – “The 27” exhibition book
- Visitor’s Award (most Instagram likes) – $100
The solo exhibition awarded as the Juror’s Award will be scheduled at a mutually agreed time for the duration of one month.
Entry Fee$40 for the first 5 images, $5 for each additional image. There is no limit to the number of images you may submit. Submission fees are non‑refundable.
SalesThe gallery has an online store and will include all images from the exhibition. The gallery will retain 30% of the sales price.

Established in May 2010, A Smith Gallery is located in Johnson City, Texas in the Nugent Avenue Arts District. The gallery exhibits the work of both amateur and professional photographers through juried and invitational exhibitions. Amanda Smith and Kevin Tully are the Gallery Directors.
