Assistant/Associate Professor - Counseling

Job Location: Commerce, Texas
Job Type: Faculty (9‑month, tenure‑track / tenured)
Salary: Commensurate
Summary: The Department of Counseling at East Texas A&M University invites applications for two faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure‑track) or Associate Professor (tenured), beginning Fall 2026. Candidates will contribute to teaching, research, and service missions, demonstrating expertise in play therapy, school counseling, or student affairs.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesRESEARCH
- Develop and sustain a productive program of research/creative activity leading to peer‑reviewed publications and other scholarly contributions.
- Secure external funding for research appropriate to counseling and/or your expertise area(s).
- Direct and serve on doctoral dissertation committees.
- Mentor and engage both graduate and undergraduate students in research.
TEACHING
- Teach three (3) courses each fall and spring semester across undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Contribute to the department’s core curriculum and develop graduate and undergraduate courses in areas of your expertise.
- Deliver instruction online, asynchronously and synchronously, and face‑to‑face at any campus (Commerce, Mesquite, Dallas, Plano).
- Demonstrate commitment to effective and innovative pedagogy.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and best practices in counseling and your expertise area(s).
- Actively advise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
SERVICE
- Participate collegially in departmental, college, and university committees.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to implement departmental initiatives and programs.
- Contribute to the professional counseling community through reviewing, presenting at conferences, and serving in professional organizations.
- Engage in outreach or community service consistent with the university’s mission.
- Earned doctoral degree in counseling/counselor education (or related field) and have been employed as a full‑time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1 2013; or employed as a full‑time doctoral‑level faculty member in a CORE‑accredited master’s program prior to July 1 2017; or graduated from a rehabilitation doctoral program prior to January 1 2018.
- Academic background (teaching, research, service) commensurate with the rank of assistant professor or associate professor.
- Evidence of scholarly productivity or potential for scholarly productivity in research/creative activity commensurate with rank.
- Evidence of effective teaching or teaching potential at the university level, including online and in‑person graduate‑level instruction.
- Active and sustained memberships in professional counseling organizations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to travel to any university instruction site.
- Relevant professional counseling credentials (e.g., licensed professional counselor, licensed professional counselor‑supervisor, licensed chemical dependency counselor, certified school counselor) or licensure/certification eligibility with a commitment to obtain within the first year of appointment.
- Earned doctoral degree in counseling/counselor education from a CACREP‑accredited program.
- Relevant teaching experience at the graduate level in a CACREP‑accredited program commensurate with rank.
- Evidence of training and/or experience teaching counseling coursework online, synchronously and asynchronously.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with CACREP standards and the accreditation process.
- Dissertation committee experience as chair and/or co‑chair.
- Expertise in play therapy, school counseling, or student affairs.
- Member of the Association of Play Therapy and credentialed as a Registered Play Therapist‑Supervisor™ or a certified school counselor in Texas.
