Summary
Plans and implements the daily curriculum for children in the classroom. Oversees and coordinates the children's personal care, hygiene, learning activities, specialized programs, and positive guidance. Maintains classroom records and developmental checklists. Ensures that classroom and play areas are consistently clean, safe, and conducive to learning. Informs parents of their children's progress on a daily basis. Supervises and directs activities of the assistant teacher assigned to the classroom, and keeps the director informed on a timely basis of any pertinent issues regarding staff, children, families, and the program.
Responsibilities- Develop and implement curriculum activities and lesson plans that promote children’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.
- Administer program schedule, including outdoor time, meals, snacks, and special activities.
- Apply positive guidance techniques, counseling children when social, academic, or adjustment problems arise.
- Maintain accurate and current records of each child’s developmental milestones, accidents, anecdotal notes, and attendance.
- Arrange a developmentally appropriate room environment, decor, and learning area.
- Plan formal and informal parent conferences with the director’s guidance, and ensure daily activity lists are posted for parents.
- Manage classroom bulletin boards and uphold Texas Minimum Standards related to center operations.
- Meet with prospective families and communicate appropriately with potential new customers.
- Supervise the assistant teacher’s daily duties, mentor the assistant to develop required skills, and participate in the assistant’s formal review process.
- Assist in training new staff and familiarizing them with program practices, forms, and schedules.
- Establish and maintain primary caregiver groups.
- Observe, record, and report any significant behavior of children or staff that could affect quality of care.
- Participate actively in center events, staff training sessions, meetings, and programs.
- Notify the director immediately of needed repairs to buildings, play areas, equipment, or toys.
- Accept temporary work assignments when regular staff are unavailable (e.g., answering phones, cooking, assisting in program management).
- Implement appropriate emergency procedures (fire, tornado, chemical leak, etc.), administer CPR/First Aid during serious incidents, and maintain a safe, neat, and clean environment.
- Meet or exceed state licensing requirements: age 18+, HS Diploma or GED, and availability for CPR/First Aid certification.
- Physical ability to repeatedly bend, stoop, run, lift, and carry children.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with children and parents.
- Maintain at least 30 hours of training each year.
The lead teacher reports directly to the director and takes direction from other center management personnel. The lead teacher supervises the day‑to‑day work assignments of the assistant teacher in his/her classroom.
