Summary

The Assistant Chief of Police is the second highest ranking member of the Police Department and a command rank Police Officer appointed by the Chief of Police. Serves at the direction of the Chief of Police as a Department Commander, effectively planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and otherwise supervising and managing departmental personnel, activities, and resources.

Responsibilities
  • Provides supervision, support, and management of the departmental divisions, providing effective and efficient leadership and coordination of resources and activities.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, policies and priorities for each assigned service and/or operational area; oversees the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and plans related to departmental services and operations.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures and provides direction and training necessary to increase the productivity and efficiency of departmental personnel and functions.
  • Coordinates activities with subordinate supervisors and other departmental personnel to ensure consistency in the understanding and implementing of Administrative Directives, City Ordinances, policies, procedures, and laws.
  • Assists in planning, directing and coordinating, through subordinate level management staff, the Department's work plan; assigns projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures; meets with key staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Evaluates workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identifies opportunities for improvement; directs and implements changes.
  • Assists in formulating significant policies related to the Department's services and activities; prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  • Assists in selecting, motivating, and evaluating department staff; provides or coordinates training and works with employees to correct deficiencies; and assists in initiating, implementing, and administering disciplinary procedures.
  • Establishes lines of communication with all segments of the community to stay in touch with citizen needs and to facilitate the delivery of quality services.
  • Acts as Chief of Police in the absence of, and at the direction of, the Chief of Police.
  • Responds to request from City officials at the direction of the Chief of Police or in his absence.
  • Attend City and community meetings as needed or at the direction of the Chief of Police.
  • Plans, organize and coordinates Division activities; evaluate crime and enforcement trends and patterns and recommend staffing adjustments and PPPD responses; meet regularly with staff to resolve workload and technical issues; investigate complaints on PPPD incidents, programs and services.
  • Reviews enforcement and investigation activities and assures that appropriate actions are taken, department policies and procedures are followed, customer service goals are met, and state and federal laws are effectively enforced in the best interests of the City.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to ensure that the Department operates efficiently and effectively, and employees meet the goals and objectives established by the Police Chief.
  • Maintains integrity, professionalism, values and goals of the Police Department by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
  • May be required to respond after hours, including holidays and weekends, in the event of a departmental or City-wide emergency.
  • Able to testify in court proceedings.
  • Adheres to personnel, safety, and departmental policies, procedures, and Administrative Directives.
  • Keeps the Chief of Police informed of relevant work activities.
