Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP-CRNFA) or Physician Assistant (PA) Cardiothoracic Surgery | Heart Institute Join a National Leader in Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery

Cincinnati Children’s is internationally recognized for excellence in pediatric and congenital heart surgery and transplantation
. We care for some of the most complex cardiac conditions that other hospitals are unable to treat. Our Heart Surgery Program supports patients with congenital heart defects from before birth through adulthood
.

With expertise spanning pediatric and adult congenital care, our surgeons perform approximately 600 cardiothoracic surgeries each year
, including 15–20 heart, lung, and multi‑organ transplants annually
. Families travel from more than 48 states and 22 countries to receive care from our world‑renowned Heart Institute team.

Position Highlights

We are seeking an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP with CRNFA) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our Cardiothoracic Surgery team. In this role, you will function as a vital member of a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary care team delivering exceptional, family‑centered care.

Schedule & Coverage
  • Shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Schedule: Requires flexibility to meet patient care, including weekends, holidays, and on‑call coverage
  • Hours: Average 40 hours per week
  • Scheduling is managed in 6‑week time blocks
    :
    • Two weeks of four 12‑hour shifts
    • Four weeks of three 12‑hour shifts
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide care for cardiothoracic surgery patients across the continuum
  • Participate in outpatient clinics
    , including pre‑operative evaluations
  • Round on inpatients and manage post‑operative care
  • Assist in the operating room
    , including first assist responsibilities as applicable
  • Participate in weekday and weekend call rotation
  • Respond on‑site for emergent cases as required
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, intensivists, nursing, and ancillary teams
Qualifications
  • Licensed Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) with CRNFA certification or licensed Physician Assistant (PA)
  • Eligible for or holding Ohio licensure
  • Previous cardiothoracic surgery, critical care, or complex inpatient experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to thrive in a high‑acuity, fast‑paced surgical environment

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Patient Care- Perform history and/or physical exams on patients presenting for care in area of expertise. Assess and diagnose illnesses, including chronic and acute conditions. Formulate, document and monitor a treatment plan. Order and monitor therapeutic interventions including but not limited to diets, laboratory, radiological and diagnostic tests as deemed necessary by patient history and/or physical exam. Provide clinical consultation, order interdisciplinary consults.

    Professional practice including but not limited to prescription of medications in accordance with Federal and State Law & Rules and CCHMC policy. Attains and maintains competency in subspecialty practice, skills and procedures in accordance with Joint Commission standards for focused (FPPE) and ongoing (OPPE) professional practice evaluation.
  • Outcomes Identification and Planning- Develops outcomes as measurable goals that provide direction for continuity of care & consistency among providers. Develops, prioritizes, evaluates & modifies an individualized comprehensive plan of care. Addresses each diagnosis or issue, as appropriate. Derives outcomes & plans of care that involve the patient/family/caregiver when possible & are realistic to the patient/family/caregiver capabilities & resources.
