Security Officer III

Job SummaryThe Security Officer III performs highly complex security services, supporting the Security Supervisor in a forensic mental health environment. Responsibilities include patrolling grounds, conducting investigations, managing the hospital switchboard, and responding to emergencies.
Key Responsibilities- Patrol hospital grounds and monitor for trespassing, vandalism, and emergencies.
- Conduct initial investigations, document incidents, and write reports.
- Manage temporary switchboard duties, including the fire alarm system and emergency response phone lines.
- Assist patients, staff, and visitors, opening gates and providing direction.
- Supervise junior security officers and adjust daily activities to meet department objectives.
- Perform administrative duties such as preparing schedules, reviewing reports, and representing the department in meetings.
- Provide crisis intervention and escort disruptive individuals off campus.
- Operate state vehicles to transport personnel and maintain inspection forms.
Required:
Minimum five years continuous experience in law enforcement, security or corrections, OR minimum three years security experience in a mental health facility.
Required skills:
Patrol, investigate, emergency response, crisis intervention, and report writing.
- Knowledge of alarm devices, traffic and parking regulations, and emergency response procedures.
- Skills in personal interaction with patients, staff, and the public.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to patrol, detect incidents, and take appropriate action.
- Ability to react calmly in emergency situations.
- Physical ability to walk or stand for long periods.
- Driving capability, including out-of-town driving and a wheelchair van.
Must possess a valid Texas driver license within 90 days of hire, or provide a certified outside‑state driving record. Current CPR/AED certification preferred; must obtain within six months if not current.
Additional RequirementsFingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and specific registry checks. Male applicants 18‑25 must register with Selective Service. Immunization per HHSC policy is required.
