Equipment Mechanic I or II

Job Description for Equipment Mechanic I or II (2503531). Position located in Delta County Maintenance Section, Cooper, TX.

Salary

Equipment Mechanic I – $44,400 - $61,130 yearly
Equipment Mechanic II – $45,521 - $71,055 yearly

Work Schedule

Full-time | Shift: Monday-Friday 7:00AM – 3:30PM | Travel: 5% of the time

Equipment Mechanic I Responsibilities
  • Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti‑locking systems.
  • Handle and dispose of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
  • Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges.
  • Order, pick up and deliver parts, materials, tools, and operate heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment; move related items as required.
  • Perform quality assurance and analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • May travel and perform work in other shops throughout the state as required.
  • Troubleshoot, test and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and perform complex diagnostic work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for use by checking required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, mobile radios.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Equipment Mechanic II Responsibilities
  • All duties of Equipment Mechanic I.
  • Perform acetylene and electric arc welding repairs.
  • Complete repair order paperwork and accurately enter data into fleet information management system.
Minimum Qualifications
    Experience:Equipment Mechanic I – 2 years automotive, medium/heavy truck or construction equipment diagnostics and repair;
    Equipment Mechanic II – 4 years.
  • Substitutions for

    Experience:

    Associate’s degree in Automotive or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years experience; certificates of completion from a technical training institute may substitute on a year for year basis.
  • Licenses and

    Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license;
    Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of hire;
    State Vehicle Safety Inspector license if performing state safety vehicle inspections.
  • Competencies for Equipment Mechanic I: Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines; troubleshooting and calibrating electronic and mechanical components; using hand and power tools; reading and interpreting repair parts contracts; following safety standards.
  • Competencies for Equipment Mechanic II: State procurement guidelines for parts purchases and P-card use; brake repairs including anti‑locking systems; coordinating labor, materials and equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to hazards moving vehicles, mechanical parts and chemicals.
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.
  • Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing, walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Stooping, bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
  • Kneeling, bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
  • Reaching, extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Pushing, using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction.
  • Grasping, applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
  • Pre‑employment physical required.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; subject to random drug testing.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Required to work alternate schedules during emergency response situations such as adverse weather events.
  • Required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
