General Description

Provide supervision and direct care for youth in a residential correctional facility. Aimed at helping youth progress in learning and applying methods to identify and manage reactions to stress and trauma, and to respond more socially appropriately. Employ appropriate intervention methods for behavioral issues to aid learning and correcting behavior. Maintain safe environments and employ security measures when youth, staff, or others are in danger.

Interact and engage with youth in ways that maintain appropriate structure while exercising understanding of brain development in youth with complex trauma. Maintain healthy relationships, boundaries, and recognize progress and good choices made by youth.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitate youth rehabilitation, supervise youth, and coach personal development according to individualized treatment plans.
  • Work assigned shift, be on‑call, and may be required to work in excess of 40 hours per week.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Engage in competency‑based training to coach youth under the Texas Model of trauma‑informed corrections.
  • Hold youth accountable, help them learn socially acceptable responses, and use judgment to determine when safety is at risk.
  • Help youth identify responses to stress, fear, and triggers, and teach increased emotional self‑regulation skills.
  • Model self‑regulation skills and remain calm during stress and crisis.
  • Gain basic knowledge of each youth’s treatment plan and support skill acquisition.
  • Coach youth on resolving conflict with other youth and staff when appropriate.
  • Participate in the Youth Service Team and contribute to each youth’s treatment plan.
  • Provide a predictable schedule for youth with transparency, warnings, and prompts for movements and transitions.
  • Implement and monitor youth activities, programs, and behaviors individually and in groups.
  • Observe and inform staff daily of significant behavioral and treatment‑related conditions affecting youth or the group.
  • Provide services to potentially aggressive/combative youth.
Career Ladder

JCOs receive salary adjustments upon meeting eligibility criteria per agency policy until they reach the top level. Promotion depends on experience and performance. Experienced JCOs who return within 18 months are exempt from the pre‑service academy, while newer hires attend full‑time pre‑service training.
