Job Overview

Ensures the personal safety of the facility users by enforcing all rules and regulations. Supervises and gives direction to the lifeguarding staff to accomplish daily goals and objectives.

Qualifications / Certifications
  • Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Lifeguard Training Instructor or American Red Cross

    Certifications:
  • Lifeguarding Waterpark w/ CPR, First Aid, AED Training.
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training.
  • Administering Emergency Oxygen Training.
  • Asthma Inhaler and Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector Training.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Performs maintenance work to pool, spectator areas and restrooms.
  • Helps monitor water chemistry in the pool.
  • Participates with weekly in-service training; evaluates and gives instruction to lifeguards to improve techniques; performs CPR audits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • The incumbent must be able to determine and enforce safety measures in and around the pool.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervises and gives direction to the lifeguarding staff to accomplish daily goals and objectives.
  • Must be able to supervise the activities of subordinates and be able to give direction to them to accomplish departmental objectives.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Must possess strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; to perform swimming and diving rescue techniques; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.
  • The job involves frequent walking to identify problems or hazards.
  • Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator.
  • Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, twist and reach when performing rescue and first aid activities, and maintaining pool area.
  • Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
  • Employees are exposed to loud noise levels, heights, hot temperatures, chemical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
  • Supervises swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
  • Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies.
  • Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
  • Additional requirements for consideration:
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.
  • Candidates may swim using the front crawl (freestyle), breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive, feet first or head first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath.
  • Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Physical Requirements

The indoor environment provides for a safe and healthy work environment and is smoke and drug free. Occasionally, it may be wet and humid, as well as moderately loud. The outdoor work environment may result in exposure to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, and humidity. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
