Required Qualifications- Leadership, public relation, and decision making skills.
- Through knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
- Must have current First Aid & CPR & Lifeguarding certification.
- Deal courteously & consistently with all individuals.
- Require all individuals to show proper identification before entering SRSU.
- Complete entrance & check‑out form when necessary.
- Ensure that all policies & guidelines are followed by all users.
- Recognize & respond effectively in emergencies.
- Remain in the assigned activity area at all times.
- Check out equipment to users as needed.
- Inspect all equipment for damage & wear to ensure safety & report equipment malfunctions to the Facility Assistant.
- Participate in regular in‑service training sessions.
- Exercise regularly to maintain fitness level (strength & endurance).
- Other duties assigned.
Duties as assigned, which may include office tasks, supporting the operation of facilities under prescribed operating procedures, running errands, performing other duties as required by the Director of Rec Sports.
Additional InformationLifeguard training will be offered again in May. In order to take the training course, you must be able to pass the prerequisite swim test:
- Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl (freestyle), breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
- Surface dive, feet first or head first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
