Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Assist during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize response of crews.
- Assist in administration of the maintenance section.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Inspects roads while enroute to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee timesheets.
- Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
- Operates light and heavy equipment
- Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
- Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of the equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on the team members’ career conversations; and approving leave request to ensure operational coverage.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications:
- Must have a Valid US Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with N endorsement at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

- Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
- The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Incident management procedures
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.

- Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment.
- Inventory/stock control procedures
- Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
- Maintaining a safe working relationship with others
- Operating light and heavy equipment
- Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
- Delegates both routine and important task and decisions; shares authority but has ultimate accountability.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
- Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.
- Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
- Medium work:
Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. - Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
- Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
- Talking expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
- Pulling-using upper extremities to exert force moving objects in a sustained motion.
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.

- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

- Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
