Patient Access Representative II - ER Days
Job Summary: Responsible for duties in support of departmental efficiencies including scheduling, registration, patient pre‑admission, admission, reception, and discharge functions. Must obtain complete and accurate patient demographic information. Patient Access representatives employ proper, compliant patient liability collection techniques before, during & after date of service.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Greeting patients following Conifer Standards of Care, providing world‑class customer service, completing full patient registration at date of service, adhering to financial & cash control policies and procedures, thoroughly explaining and securing hospital & patient legal forms (e.g., Advance Directives, Conditions of Services, Consent for treatment, Important Message from Medicare, EMTALA, etc.).
- Scanning Protected Health Information, creating and filing patient information packets/folders for upcoming hospital services, assisting with scheduling diagnostic procedures (entering data into scheduling system, providing appointment instructions, other tasks as needed).
- Educating patients about financial liabilities, employing compliant collection techniques, performing cash reconciliation and ensuring payment entry adheres to financial & cash control policies.
- Securing medical necessity checks/verification per CMS, verifying insurance, benefits, coverage, and eligibility, completing registration financial clearance work lists, obtaining authorization for scheduled & unscheduled services, securing inpatient visit notifications to payors; assisting with scheduling and coordinating post‑discharge care.
- Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute.
- Working knowledge of PC/CRT/printer.
- Prefered knowledge of hospital environment, compliance standards, and third‑party payer requirements.
- Strong customer service experience and ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Excellent written & oral communication skills.
- Able to perform essential duties in at least two Patient Access service areas, including the Emergency Department.
- Professional negotiation skills for collecting owed money and a collaborative approach to internal & external client relationships.
- Proper interpretation of physician orders, medical terminology and insurance cards while meeting Conifer Standards of Care.
- High‑school diploma or GED required.
- 0–1 year in a customer‑service role.
- 0–1 year of administrative experience in a medical facility, health insurance, or related area preferred.
- Some college coursework preferred.
- Must sit at a computer terminal for extended periods.
- Resolve physician office and patient issues; may experience extreme patient volume and uncooperative patients.
- Occasionally lift/carry items up to 25 lbs.
- Frequent prolonged standing, sitting, and walking; occasionally push a wheelchair to assist patients.
- Hospital administration setting.
- Potential exposure to life‑threatening patient conditions.
Must be available to work hours and days as needed based on departmental/system demands.
