Overview

Our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) location is looking for a Waste Advisor to play an integral part in the waste process at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). This role provides in-field communications and support to waste generators and waste receivers for adherence to the waste management process, and verifies waste from generators to ensure the Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) is met for processing, storage and/or disposal.

you will be doing
  • Interpreting work assignment instructions; selecting standard procedures, techniques and equipment, and establishing work sequence.
  • Setting up work areas including equipment for surveys, experiments, tests, and analysis.
  • Conducting experiments and tests; recording, organizing, and analyzing observations and suggesting conclusions.
  • Recognizing and investigating reasons for deviations in results obtained.
  • Making calculations and preparing charts, graphs and other supporting data for reports; assisting in the preparation of technical reports; preparing and modifying drawings and designs.
  • Extracting and compiling data using established procedures.
  • Completing safety assessments and work permits where qualified.
  • Evaluating historical data and information from generators to identify routine and operational wastes generated across CNL activities.
  • Creating and managing waste documents such as the Waste Enquiry Form (WEF) and Waste Information Form (WIF).
  • Assisting waste generators in implementing local waste minimization initiatives to reduce overall waste generation.
  • Providing guidance and support to waste generators, field supervisors, and project staff on handling specific project wastes effectively.
  • Conducting regular inspections to ensure compliance with waste management protocols and addressing generator needs promptly.
  • Completing and managing requests for characterization forms to help generators complete field verification activities.
  • Completing and managing waste data forms.
  • Serving as a point of contact for waste generators, clarifying priorities and communicating timelines for verification activities and waste collection requirements.
  • Arranging and performing in-field waste walk downs.
  • Overseeing and leading waste generation activities.
  • Attending planning meetings.
  • Reviewing and providing guidance for work planning.
  • Sharing experiences and best practices with peers to improve waste management processes across operational and decommissioning areas.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for
  • Education
    • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position and two to three (2-3) years' of pertinent technological experience OR
    • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and three to eight (3-8) years' of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience
    • Experience analyzing technical data including sample analyses results and historical records.
    • Experience in writing technical documents.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Working knowledge of common software programs including Microsoft Excel and Word.
    • Knowledge of nuclear waste management processes and streams.
    • Knowledge of chemistry and/or radiochemistry would be considered an asset.
    • Strong organizational skills to effectively manage the variety of waste projects with demonstrated attention to detail.
    • Strong interpersonal skills to work as part of a team, as well as ability to work independently to accomplish tasks.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
    • Capable of performing mathematical activities to calculate package activities as required.
    • Ability to solicit, evaluate and implement advice on technical matters from staff and from technical and safety support groups.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.
