Route setters at The Spot are primarily responsible for the creation and production of high quality commercial boulder problems and roped routes. The Spot’s unique flavor of route setting encourages a creative mindset and seeks staff who are looking to progress and continually develop their craft. Events and competitions are a large part of The Spot’s culture, and as such setting staff will be asked to curate comp style boulders, work occasional long days, be a team player, and actively participate in the Spot community.
The Lead route setter oversees the daily operations and production of the setting teams assigned to their home facility/facilities. The majority of the following responsibilities will be done in coordination with and support from the Route setting Manager.
- Establish and execute all necessary route setting activities to maintain the highest possible level of quality, grading, consistency, turnover, and innovation with the route setting product.
- Continually strive to improve the route setting product and establish the gym as an industry leader in the climbing space through The Spot’s route setting.
- Collect metrics that indicate and predict department health, and share updates with your direct manager frequently.
- Maintain a positive reputation in your role as a mentor for setters, staff, and the community.
- Run day-to-day operations of all setting activities and products with attention and regard to risk mitigation of the setting and climbing environment.
- Manage production to create a well rounded experience for all levels of climbers - from beginners to world-class athletes
- Establish a density and spread per facility; manage and track with consistency.
- Work with the Route setting Manager to adjust the route setting plan & activities to match seasonal and environmental demands.
- Work with the route setting Manager to maintain a consistent feedback loop with our community
- Incorporate regular client feedback into our route setting program.
- Communicate all local client feedback to your direct supervisor.
- Communicate out wall closures and other public facing announcements to direct supervisor in a timely manner.
- Attend and be prepared for all department meetings, as required.
- Work with the route setting Manager to maintain and be accountable to the P&L for your department. Tasks could include, but are not limited to:
- Manage and maintain the route setting equipment, all climbing surfaces, flooring and terrain, and route setting supplies and equipment with the highest amount of care and pride (i.e. hold selection, hold cleaning, hold stripping, taping, tape maintenance, tape & bolt inventory, etc.).
- Maintain a current inventory of all setting equipment, including holds, PPE and other supplies.
- Work with the route setting Manager to keep all departmental SOPs current per industry standards and Spot standards, and where necessary develop SOPs to fill any gaps in Spot route setting procedures and processes
- Develop a risk management protocol that takes into account industry standards for work at height and PPE
- Be responsible for risk management checks associated with rental equipment: i.e ropes, harnesses, belay devices, etc.
- Be responsible for risk management checks of all climbing terrain and flooring as well as belay devices and ropes in all roped climbing areas.

- Be a leader for the setting team through: setting high quality routes and modeling good technique and professionalism for other setters (e.g. efficiency, creativity, fore running, necessary route adaptation, etc.)
- Support with internal team relationships and conflict resolution when necessary
- Communicate up as needed when issues are not able to be resolved within your own gym.
