Position: After Hours Emergency Duty Worker )

Position Purpose

To provide crisis child welfare intervention services outside of the Agency's regular business hours.

The After‑Hours Worker will screen and investigate any allegations that a child may be in need of protection.

All requests for Agency service will also be screened and assessed for appropriate involvement.

Wage Rate: $505.00 per week worked, plus $160.00 per statutory holiday worked.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education: H.B.S.W., BSW, BA, SSW, CYW or other Human Services qualifications and/or any combination of education and progressively responsible experience in Social Work will be considered.

Other qualifications: Candidates with other academic qualifications and related work experience plus demonstrated ability will be considered.

  • Excellent crisis intervention skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in applying therapeutic approaches with children and families within an anti‑oppressive, strengths based, collaborative framework.
  • Excellent communication skills including robust interpersonal, written and verbal skills and an ability to effectively work with a wide variety of people and diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess risk and to collaborate with the family and other community resources.
  • Current or recent Child Protection Worker Authorization.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, integrate and interpret complex information.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and tact to address a range of issues and to problem‑solve.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Computer skills and ability to adapt to new technology.
  • Reliable vehicle, safe driving record and valid G Driver's License.
  • Upon offer of employment, submission of a Current Criminal Records Check (Vulnerable Sector), deemed satisfactory to the employer.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Child Welfare Organization within the community context.
  • Travel within the district as required.
Principal Responsibilities
  • Screen all calls directed to the Emergency After Hours Program to determine whether a child may be in need of protection and/or at immediate risk in accordance with the Child, Youth and Family Services Act.
  • Provide crisis intervention and/or short‑term therapeutic mediation and supportive service to children and families as required.
  • Actively investigate all allegations of maltreatment and other protection concerns and develop assessments of individual and family needs, including referrals from the community, other professionals, or the client directly.
