Position: Dental Assistant, Tigard Dental Office (40hrs, Days)

Overview

Job Summary:

Provide direct support to dentists, hygienists, denturists and other provider personnel in the delivery of dental care and service within a Kaiser Permanente dental office.

Responsibilities
  • Performs all of the duties permitted a dental assistant consistent with the individual s training and under the observation of a licensed provider as referenced in State Dental Practice Act and related Administrative Rules. These duties include: apply topical anesthetic and desensitizing agents as directed by the provider; removal of sutures and post-extraction and periodontal dressings; retract tissues during an operation;

    assist in the placement or removal of a rubber dam; remove debris using suction or other devices; perform non-hazardous extra-oral procedures; inspect the oral cavity; dry root canals; place temporary filling material; take impressions for a periodontal night guard; polish coronal surfaces; train patients in oral hygiene and prevention; place and expose dental radiographs, adjust equipment, and prepare for exposing films.
  • In support of the practice of a dentist provider who is not an orthodontist: preliminarily select and size bands; remove fixed orthodontic appliances; check for loose bands and brackets; remove ligature ties and head appliances; place and remove arch wires, elastics, and orthodontic separators; take intra-oral measurements for orthodontic procedures; remove supra-gingival bonding material with a hand piece not exceeding 25,000 RPM;

    place ligature ties and head appliances; train patients in oral hygiene and prevention; place and expose radiographs; organize patient dental records and ensure availability for provider use; greet, inform patient of general treatment, and identify provider to be seen according to established guidelines; review health questionnaire with patient and notify provider of any conditions that could affect treatment; promote patient comfort and answer questions as directed by the provider.
  • Anticipate provider needs in delivering patient care and maintain appropriate scheduling and flow. Prepare, organize, arrange and pass dental instruments, supplies, and materials as requested. Establish and maintain a clear, clean operating field. Record information in the patient s dental record, and verify care-related information on all necessary forms and documents per guidelines. If required, enter, retrieve and transmit patient care information via the TEAM scheduling system.

    Respond to medical emergencies per guidelines. Expose and process dental radiographs as required. Take and record patient blood pressure. Maintain infection control and a clean, organized work environment. Ensure proper handling of materials per hazard communication and infection control guidelines. Ensure equipment functions through preventive maintenance reporting any issues to the office manager or supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the office manager or supervisory personnel consistent with training and experience, and in accordance with program policies, the State Board of Dentistry rules, the State Dental Practice Act, and other governing regulations. When the dentist is on the premises, perform functions such as placing matrix retainers, polishing amalgam restorations, removing supra-gingival excess cement, taking impressions for diagnostic and opposing models, fabricating temporary restorations, intra-oral bite registrations for study model articulation, placing and removing a rubber dam, fabricating temporary crowns, and assisting in monitoring patients receiving nitrous oxide, as authorized by Board rules.
