JOB TITLE: ASC Pre/Post-Operative Registered Nurse

SUPERVISOR: Director of Day Surgery

HOURS PER WEEK: 40/Non-exempt (Monday - Friday 4 x 10-hour shifts, variable day off)

DEPARTMENT: Day Surgery

HIRING BONUS: $1,000 after 90 days

PRIMARY FUNCTION: To provide quality care and adequate evaluation and monitoring of legal and physical needs of patient.

• Receive patient (and parents if working with pediatric patients) in pre-operative area.
• Check the wristband of patient, confirm patient identity.
• Check the chart for completed procedural consent and verify with patient.
• Complete pre-op patient assessment and document in EMR as required by policy (Use pediatric aids where appropriate).
• Complete all practitioners’ orders and document in EMR.
• Remain available for questions throughout process.
• Complete short-term patient teaching, preparing patient for procedure and post-operative care.
• Be vigilant as to the change in condition, with immediate assessment, interpretation and documentation of signs and symptoms, notifying surgeon of any changes.
• Receive oral post-operative report from anesthesia personnel. This will include procedure, type of anesthesia, medications used, general condition of patient and any other pertinent O.R. information.
• Note level of consciousness, complete thorough assessment and document in EMR as required by policy.
• Discharge patients when they meet criteria per policy.
• Review discharge instructions and medications with the patient and the family. Provide all patients with copy of written discharge instructions.
• Attend staff meetings.
• Uses appropriate PPE for patient care and other settings where required.
• Be an active participant in committees (i.e. Safety Committee, Infection Control).
• Participate in orienting new staff.
• Understand hazard risk and demonstrate complete understanding of established emergency procedures for the Surgery Center.
• Reports incidences or issues through chain of command and maintains confidentiality. Complete all employee/patient incident documentation in a thorough and timely manner.
• Assist/floats to other roles or departments as needed.
• Follows rights of medication administration, appropriately signs out medications.
• Employees will not be discourteous or disrespectful to a customer or any member of the public while in the course and scope of company business.
• Work in a cooperative manner with management/supervision, coworkers, patients and vendors.
• Abide by company policies.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Maintain regular, in person, work attendance and punctuality, as scheduled.

• Graduate of a Professional School of Nursing
• Valid Oregon Nursing license
• Current CPR/BLS/ACLS certification

• Previous surgical experience preferred
• Basic understanding of infection control
• Strong patient assessment ability
• Organizational skills and ability to prioritize work flow
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations and to work under pressure
• Proficiency and legalities of charting and telephone conversations
• Compassionate, patient and tactful
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients and staff
• Proactive, independent, and accountable
• Proficient computer skills
