Environmental Technician

Blue Heron is currently seeking three Environmental Technicians to join our Compliance and Technical Services Team in Timmins, Ontario.
The successful applicant will provide support to our Environmental Compliance and Technical department in projects for the industrial sector, primarily in the mining industry.
- Prepare job‑specific field safety plans;
- Assist with the planning of field program logistics (liaison with laboratories, preparing field gear/equipment, sample preparation, equipment maintenance);
- Lead field programs with one or multiple crews and provide daily field updates to the supervisor;
- Work in harsh weather conditions and in remote areas;
- Conduct field work in accordance with Blue Heron and/or client‑specific protocols, and at a minimum, in compliance with best management practices (including QA/QC and safety measures) – field work includes the performance of surface and groundwater sampling, hydrology monitoring, soil sampling and more;
- Operate ATVs, snow machines, Argos, boats, motor, chainsaw, and other equipment for field monitoring programs (formal training and certification is considered an asset);
- Troubleshoot and fix minor mechanical problems encountered when operating field equipment;
- Maintain adequate, legible, comprehensive, and concise field notes on every field program;
- Use and maintain typical environmental monitoring equipment (multiparameter water quality meter, streamflow meter, water interface meter, survey equipment).
- Data entry into appropriate format (typically Excel);
- Bottle/sample and chain‑of‑custody preparation for laboratory submissions;
- Preparation of field reports, in accordance with project requirements and timelines;
- Willingness to learn and understand environmental compliance requirements contained in permits and regulations;
- Experience and interest in working in the outdoors in all weather and field conditions encountered in Northern Ontario;
- Significant experience with recreational vehicles – including snowmobiles, ATVs, Argos, boats;
- Good organizational skills;
- Self‑motivated with an ability to work independently;
- Ability to travel to client facilities, with overnight stays, and work a flexible schedule;
- A positive and enthusiastic attitude, willingness to learn, and the ability to work with little supervision;
- A valid driver’s license.
- College diploma or university degree in a relevant field (environmental technician or environmental sciences);
- 3–5 years of relevant experience as an environmental monitor or technician, ideally at industrial facilities (mining, forestry).
