Overview
Environmental Scientist position at Leidos serving the NASA Environmental and Medical Contract (NEMCON) at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida. The role supports NASA Environmental Management Branch (EMB) and Environmental Assurance Branch (EAB) at KSC and acts as an Environmental Point of Contact (EPOC) to ensure environmental compliance during all phases of construction projects. The EPOC provides environmental guidance and consultation to NASA KSC organizations and works with project contractors to interpret environmental regulations related to various media, including stormwater, hazardous and controlled wastes, PCBs, registered storage tanks, air emissions, and natural resources.

Responsibilities- Provide technical direction to NASA-KSC construction projects through all phases of project construction, including review of construction deliverables such as shop drawings and transmittals.
- Assist the NASA Project Manager and stakeholders with preparing a KSC Environmental Checklist to identify potential environmental compliance requirements.
- Perform site walks to identify hazardous materials/waste generation, permit requirements, environmental impacts, and opportunities for recycling.
- Participate in design reviews and pre-work meetings to ensure environmental requirements in the KSC Record of Environmental Consideration (REC) are communicated to Project Managers and construction contractors.
- Review construction contract design packages for applicability of KSC environmental clauses and specifications.
- Conduct site inspections during construction to monitor compliance with REC requirements and partner with the NASA Project Manager to mitigate noncompliance.
- Provide field consultation to construction personnel regarding multimedia environmental requirements (waste management, stormwater, regulated tanks, etc.) and coordinate with NEMCON SMEs as needed.
- Coordinate waste containers for use by construction projects and select appropriate container types based on waste determinations.
- General understanding of environmental regulations related to stormwater, hazardous and controlled waste, PCBs, registered storage tanks, and natural resources.
- Knowledge of labeling, storage, handling, and disposal requirements for hazardous waste under the large quantity generator designation.
- Understanding of operational practices at construction sites across small to large projects.
- Ability to read, analyze, and understand engineering designs, documents, and contracts.
- Strong mathematical and communication skills, including the ability to convey precise data and terminology in writing and verbally.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Valid driver’s license and eligibility for clearance at a federal facility.
- Ability to pass an occupational health physical to obtain and maintain qualifications and certifications required for this work.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work effectively in a team and with all levels of employees.
- RCRA Training/Experience
- FDEP Qualified Stormwater Inspector certification
- Extensive technical knowledge as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in one or more environmental media
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geology, chemistry, biology, or related scientific discipline or equivalent experience and less than 2 years of prior relevant work experience.
Working ConditionsDemands may require periodic physical exertion such as walking on uneven terrain, stooping, and possibly lifting up to 50 pounds, outdoors in all weather conditions and sometimes for extended periods, sometimes while wearing PPE.
Clearance RequirementsRequires ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.
