Aerospace / Aviation / Avionics, Mechanical Engineer
We are launching people to the Moon and Mars. If you want to be part of this amazing mission and enjoy working in a great team environment, we would love to have you as part of our team that is making history, today. It takes big ideas and determination to take NASA's vision and make it reality. That's what we do every day.
The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.
ResponsibilitiesAreas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
- Perform hazardous and non-hazardous fluid operations primarily for spacecraft hypergolic propellant loading.
- Responsible for developing plans, writing work authorization documents, leading Task Teams, creating software products for the firing room console interaction with the hardware, and executing tests and SLS/Artemis upper stage processing operations.
- This position is considered entry level and will work under the guidance and direction of an experienced engineer.
- Perform mechanical engineering tasks in support of a variety of spacecraft to include the Orion Crew Module (CM), Service Module (SM), Interim Cryogenic Propulsion System (ICPS), future upper stages for the SLS launch system, and Launch Services Program (LSP) payloads.
- Candidate will support preparations for assembly, test, processing, and launch of NASA's Launch Services Program spacecraft, SLS processing, and Orion Crew Module.
- Initial assignments will focus developing an understanding of the mechanical fluid systems for hypergolic systems (Hypers) used by the group and concept of system operations. Assignments may include software coding for the Ground Flight Application Software (GFAS) as it relates to launch countdown and testing for Hypers firing room console displays, depending on candidate aptitudes and business needs. Additional responsibilities in related issues and problem resolution will follow.
- Assignments will include preparing ground support equipment (GSE) with technicians for mechanical fluid hypergolic systems, and other fluids related engineering systems in compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and applicable pressure vessel safety standards. Thorough knowledge of flight hardware servicing and mechanical integration will be obtained.
- Candidates will be required to develop and apply knowledge of technical principles for the SLS/Artemis upper stage processing operations concepts, ground to vehicle interfaces, vehicle/ground system design and operation, Ground Flight Application Software (GFAS), and launch configuration and closeouts.
- Additional responsibilities in spacecraft processing, procedural development, test requirements, system training and task leader certification will follow.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering or technical equivalent from an accredited institution.
Depending on the candidate’s experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.
