General Description

The Infection Prevention Professional reports to the Quality Manager and is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of infectious and communicable diseases. The role educates care partners about infection prevention, develops policies and procedures to maintain rigorous infection control standards that meet regulatory and nationally organized agency recommendations, and enters data into state and national databases. The professional assesses the educational needs of all care partners and develops educational plans and curricula in response to identified organizational needs, goals, and disease trends.

They participate in infection prevention and safety environmental rounds, provide support to clinical employee health as needed, and implement quality process improvement methodologies to improve clinical and process outcomes. The professional is responsible for annual reviews and updates to the Infection Control and Prevention Plan, coordinates the Infection Control and Prevention Committee, and prepares timely reports to external agencies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform ongoing surveillance, data collection, and reporting of infectious and communicable diseases; analyze data to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for intervention.
  • Using industry and population best practices, develop, implement, and continuously monitor system practices to prevent known and future infectious states.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in infection prevention and provide consultation, education, and training to clinical and non‑clinical care partners across all departments to promote a safe environment and reduce the risk of healthcare‑associated infections (HAI).
  • Compile dashboard reports for the Medical Staff Department, Nursing Department, and multidisciplinary department committee meetings.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures to ensure rigorous infection control standards that meet regulatory and nationally organized agency recommendations.
  • Enter data into state and national databases.
  • Assess educational needs of all care partners and develop educational plans and curricula in response to identified organizational needs, goals, and disease trends.
  • Conduct rounds to include:
    • Infection prevention: transmission‑based precautions protocols, PPE compliance, hand hygiene compliance, cleaning and disinfection
    • Safety: construction, water management
    • Environmental: biohazardous waste, room pressures
    • Interdisciplinary: invasive device management (usage and necessity)
  • Plan, develop, and implement quality process improvement methodology to improve clinical and process outcomes; lead and participate in performance improvement initiatives related to infection control, including hand hygiene, device‑associated infections, and surgical site infection prevention.
  • Be responsible for annual reviews with updates to the Infection Control and Prevention Plan.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the Infection Control and Prevention Committee; prepare timely reports to external agencies.
  • Investigate suspected infection outbreaks and lead containment and mitigation efforts.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response efforts.
  • Perform similar or related duties as assigned.
  • Know fire, disaster, and safety procedures and regulations as they pertain to the work area.
Requirements Formal Education

Bachelor’s Degree required;
Master’s preferred. Majors preferred:
Epidemiology, Nursing, Public Health, Clinical Laboratory or related healthcare field.

Work Experience

2 to 3 years

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations
  • CIC (Certification in Infection Prevention and Control) required.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt preferred.
  • State of FL Nursing License preferred.
