this is skilled work with the responsibility to supervise the work of multiple public works crew members; prioritize and assigns work as necessary to complete projects assigned by division head; and oversees all activities at the work site. Incumbent must have significant job knowledge of the varied activities and handles routine assignments with little direct supervision. Crew supervisors may be assigned to the following divisions: facilities maintenance;

solid waste; streets maintenance; stormwater management; water/sewer field operations.

  • supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; addresses employee concerns and problems; manages, coaches, and documents employee performance.

  • trains staff in departmental operations, including work methods, procedures, policies, equipment use, and technical aspects of essential functions.

  • collaborates with immediate supervisor to obtain instructions, determine project methods, and organize, prioritize, and assign work to crews.

  • oversees all activity at work sites; ensures projects proceed according to schedule; resolves delays and problems; provides guidance and technical assistance; and monitors work in progress.

  • observes and checks routes for completion; ensures work meets standards for quality, cleanliness, safety, and customer service; takes corrective measures; and evaluates completed work.

  • oversees operation of equipment and tools; trains employees on proper and safe use; inspects equipment regularly; and coordinates maintenance and repairs.

  • serves as departmental representative; liaises with other departments, agencies, and organizations; responds to public inquiries and complaints; and monitors contractor services.

  • completes and maintains records and reports, including progress reports, hr documentation, and incident or damage reports.

  • ensures compliance with safety policies and osha regulations; oversees safe work zones; provides ppe; enforces safety policies; takes corrective action; and coordinates monthly safety meetings.

  • monitors and maintains supplies, materials, and equipment; ensures crews have sufficient resources; oversees use of equipment; and requisitions supplies and parts.

  • participates in departmental projects and activities; assists with maintenance tasks; uses hand and motorized tools; and manually loads, moves, and arranges materials.

  • keeps manager and division head informed of work progress, problems, and concerns; reports issues with assignments, equipment, or facilities; and completes required paperwork

  • assists crews with work as necessary.

  • performs other related duties as assigned.

knowledge, abilities, and skills
  • ability to clearly communicate department and city goals, policies, and strategic plans.

  • proficient in using multiple communication platforms, including email and social media.

  • effective communication with supervisors, employees, other departments, contractors, engineers, vendors, utility companies, outside agencies, and the public.

  • ability to accurately and promptly receive and deliver messages and information.

  • ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision.

  • high school graduate or equivalent diploma is required. Five (5) years of previous experience including public works operations. Possession of an associate or bachelor’s degree in business administration, computer science, engineering, public administration or a closely related field may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
must obtain the following certifications within nine (9) months of hire:
  • 30-hour osha general industry card, and
  • 15-hour osha disaster industry card, and
  • must possess and maintain a lock out and tag out certification
  • must complete a minimum of forty (40) hours of supervisory training within twelve (12) months of hire.
