Position: ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (NUCLEAR)
Location: Cornholme

Summary

You will serve as an Engineering Technician (Nuclear) in the Radiological Control Technician Qualifications School (C105.7) under the Manager, Radiological Controls Support (C105.1S), Radiological Control Office (C105) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Responsibilities
  • You will apply technical knowledge, practical experience and familiarity with a broad range of requirements related to radiological control to the modification, repair, and maintenance of Naval nuclear reactor plants.
  • You will evaluate and advise on technical concepts that involve exposure to ionizing radiation and provide recommendations of techniques for new radiological procedures.
  • You will manage student records to include electronic grade sheets, qualification records, and database maintenance and updates.
  • You will conduct surveillance to monitor effectiveness of training and adherence to standards.
  • You will generate, administer, and evaluate written, practical and/or oral examinations and advise on the qualification or disqualification of radiological control technicians.
Requirements

  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • Must meet applicable time‑in‑grade and retirement appointment requirements as described in DoD policy.
  • Must register for Selective Service if required.
  • Must obtain and maintain the required security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Must be able to work overtime, rotating shifts, weekends/holidays and odd shifts.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding and lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
Qualifications
  • At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level, demonstrating knowledge of naval nuclear reactors, reactor systems, health physics, and applied radiological controls such as detection and measurement of ionizing radiation.
  • Experience in technical procedures and work practices employed in nuclear work to adjust training methods and materials.
  • Experience evaluating radiation exposure data, dose assessment and risk evaluation, and radiation protection standards sufficient to assess radiological impact on personnel.
  • Experience with trade processes, procedures, tools, and guides required in the disassembly and assembly of high‑pressure water, steam, or hydraulic piping systems associated with naval nuclear propulsion plants.
  • Experience with nomenclature, location and purpose of systems and components of naval nuclear propulsion plants.
  • Experience utilizing theoretical and practical aspects of nuclear engineering and health physics through additional education, training, and/or experience.
  • Experience developing and implementing instructional courses for professional and technical level applications.
  • Experience with the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and the Radiological Controls Office and applying radiological controls to evaluate training adequacy.
  • Experience communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.
