OverviewThis position is located at the Naval Medical Health Center Portsmouth and is responsible for performing professional clinical laboratory science work supporting the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in the Lab/Clinical Pathology.

Responsibilities- Interact with employees in the same agency and/or the general public in a moderately structured setting.
- Contact medical staff, nursing staff, laboratory staff, and other health care providers from the hospital and outlying clinics.
- Communicate with individuals at various levels within the agency, such as headquarters or field offices.
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below.
Basic Requirements for Clinical Laboratory Scientist- A bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution, including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics, and successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or an equivalent accrediting body.
- Or at least a full four‑year course of study that included 12 months in a college or hospital‑based medical technology program, or a one‑year post‑bachelor’s certificate program, or the last one or two years of a four‑year program culminating in a bachelor’s in medical technology.
- Or a bachelor’s or higher degree with 16 semester hours of biological science (including one semester of microbiology), 16 semester hours of chemistry (including one semester of organic or biochemistry), one semester of mathematics, and five years of full‑time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids. This combination must demonstrate knowledge equivalent to that provided by the full four‑year course of study described above.
You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0644 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before.
Additional Qualification Requirements- One year of specialized experience performing high‑complexity patient testing, setting up and monitoring quality controls, troubleshooting and maintaining testing instruments, and performing proficiency testing for national accreditation.
- Or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a related field (e.g., Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology).
- Or a combination of education and experience where the computed percentage of the requirements isод at least 100%, as described in the official guidance.
- Certification is required from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT), or a comparable board or registry as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS). A copy of the certification must be submitted with the applicationtemp.
If using foreign education, credentials must have been evaluated by a recognized private organization and deemed equivalent to those obtained in an accredited U.S. program.
