The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) is a privately endowed, non-profit institution founded in 1901. TMA opens its collection to the public, free of charge, and offers education programs and an architecturally significant campus.

Summary

The Protective Services Officer (PSO) specializes in entry/egress control, behavior detection, and incident response. PSOs protect visitors, staff, the collection, and the facility by patrolling assigned posts and remaining alert to detect suspicious or threatening behavior. As a highly visible member of the Museum staff, the PSO provides customer service by treating visitors with respect, consideration, and tact while providing general information and guidance.

Key

Accountabilities
  • Visitor Engagement & Customer Service:
    Enhance the visitor experience by being polite, friendly, and providing information in a responsive way.
  • Visitor Assistance:
    Open doors as visitors enter/exit the Museum and as required by emergency situations.
  • Professional Demeanor:
    Handle security situations tactfully to ensure visitors feel welcome.
Safety & Security Enforcement
  • Observe and engage visitors to detect suspicious or threatening behavior.
  • Deny access to TMA property when detecting a serious threat to visitors, staff, or assets.
  • Monitor and control entry and egress of assigned post.
  • Conduct searches of property to prevent unauthorized items and contraband.
  • Prevent unauthorized handling or tampering with works of art.
  • Respond to emergencies efficiently; administer basic first aid and CPR as needed.
  • Report observed safety violations, critical incidents, or unusual activity; complete written reports as required.
Patrol, Monitoring & Asset Protection
  • Patrol assigned areas during public hours.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures, including locking/unlocking doors and conducting gallery sweeps.
  • Record daily inventory counts and monitor temperature/humidity in gallery spaces.
  • Use computer-based technology (email, calendar, timekeeping, payroll systems, and security video management system).
Teamwork & Training
  • Participate in departmental training and assist with new officer training and onboarding.
  • Perform light housekeeping duties required by the post.
  • Participate in ongoing training in accessibility, anti-bias practices, and inclusive visitor services; understand needs of individuals with cognitive, sensory, or mobility-related disabilities.
  • Foster a sense of belonging and psychological safety for all visitors and staff.
Professional Conduct & Appearance
  • Maintain the highest level of professionalism in behavior and appearance.
Other Duties
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
Relationships

Reports to the Director of Protective Services and the Protective Services Supervisors. May take direction from Protective Services Team Leads. Works with other Protective Services team members, special events and catering, programming staff, and others. Interacts with customers in a friendly, positive and helpful manner.

Education And Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 6 months’ experience in security, law enforcement, or military-related position
  • Experience working with the public
  • Experience using computer-based technology
Specialized Knowledge, Competencies, And Abilities
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to be diplomatically proactive.
  • Ability to remain alert and focused during busy periods or when alone at post.
  • Willingness to stay current on Museum programming and respond to visitor inquiries.
