POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision performs skilled work of moderate difficulty in assembling, installing and maintaining, electric, electronic, computer-controlled and radio-controlled traffic control systems and equipment, in the construction and maintenance of underground and overhead cable systems, and in the installation and maintenance of Fiber Optic cable systems; performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Assembles, installs, tests, adjusts, repairs, maintains, relocates and removes traffic control equipment (including electric, electronic and computer-controlled and radio-controlled systems), and other communication equipment; designs, redesigns, modernizes, builds, adds and rebuilds basic electrical and electronic circuitry for traffic control and communication systems;
- Tests circuits, solid state components and other components, using various testing devices, and isolates defects and corrects or replaces them;
- Adjusts traffic signal and communication devices and equipment for the most efficient operation;
- Recommends changes to proposed construction plans based upon existing conditions pending approval of supervisor;
- Performs in-the-field preventive maintenance, major repairs and tests, installs and removes foundations, manholes, pull boxes, conduit, electrical cables, fiber optic cables, messenger cables, poles, guy wires, guy anchors, pedestals, pole bases, cross arms, fuse boxes, breaker boxes, pedestrian and vehicular signal heads, traffic signal controllers, wires and other live components, pulls and splices cable, builds forms and wire cages for concrete and mixing/finishing concrete, digs holes and trenches with equipment or by hand with shovel;
- Works from prints, drawings and layouts; works in manholes and pull boxes, from bucket and/or platform trucks, and on poles; trims trees to clear overhead wires and provide signal visibility;
- Landscapes work area to original condition;
- Pumps and clears manholes; cuts, threads, bends, connects and lays conduit/pipe;
- Cleans, paints and maintains equipment;
- Operates hydraulic equipment, cable winches, air compressors, augers and air tools;
- Drives trucks and operates truck mounted equipment; assists technicians of higher classification;
- Provides orientation to new employees in specific Traffic Engineering field operations;
- Maintains required records of work performed and materials used and prepares reports of work assigned and completed;
- Installs temporary traffic control devices.
- Tools, equipment, materials, methods and procedures used in signal and communications installation, maintenance and repair;
- Wiring diagrams and circuits;
- Occupational hazards and proper safety precautions;
- Traffic control and communication systems and equipment;
- Cables and conduit;
- Traffic control patterns as stated in ODOT and City regulations;
- some knowledge of computer operations.
- Use of tools and equipment pertinent to the trade;
- Trouble-shooting circuitry and related areas;
- Working from prints, drawings, layouts and blueprints;
- Performing work requiring good physical condition and dexterity;
- Working from heights up to 50' and in manholes;
- Analyzing problems and recommending alternatives to supervisor;
- Following oral and written directions;
- Working under varied traffic and weather conditions.
- Graduation from high school or General Educational Development (GED) Tests equivalency
- Two (2) years of combined experience in the maintenance and servicing of Traffic Signals, Railroad signals, Telecommunications and Networking, Electronics/Computer repair (IT technician), Alarm/CCTV, Fiber optics, Electrician or cable/Satellite Television.
- Must be able to visually distinguish colors involved in traffic signal systems.
- Must be able to properly lift objects weighing up to ninety (90) pounds, routinely climb in and out of lift bucket without assistance from another individual, routinely work at heights of 20 feet or more, and be physically qualified to perform the duties of the position at the time of appointment.
- Must obtain a permanent State of Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without restrictions on vehicles having air brakes prior to the completion of 720 work hours during the probationary period.
- Must provide proof of a State of Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License to the employer. Failure to obtain required license will result in dismissal from employment with the City of Toledo.
