Position Purpose
Topeka Public Schools science educators demonstrate a commitment to learning for all students by maintaining organized, student-centered classrooms, presenting content-rich and standards-based lessons, meeting individual needs through assessments and data, and using a variety of instructional strategies reflective of best practices.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in science education and a passing score on the state-required Praxis test.
- ESOL endorsement preferred.
- Valid Kansas Teaching license for grades 9‑12 with endorsement to teach Earth Space Science.
- Strong content knowledge in secondary level science.
- Record of successful teaching or student‑teaching experience.
- Consistent, reliable attendance.
Physical/Emotional Requirements
Walk, sit, talk, and hear frequently. Stand, reach, lift up to 25 pounds. Requires vision (close, distance, depth perception, ability to adjust focus). Interaction with staff, meet demands from several people, occasionally work extended hours.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Teach earth space science to students using the district‑approved curriculum.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional aids stressing the scientific method and laboratory learning.
- Plan and demonstrate a balanced instructional program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student experiments.
- Provide individual and small‑group instruction to accommodate varying abilities.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for an orderly environment.
- Instruct students in proper care of materials; organize storage and control use.
- Evaluate student performance and prepare progress reports.
- Assist in selection and requisition of instructional materials and maintain inventory control.
- Maintain professional competence through development activities.
- Communicate with students, parents, and counselors about progress.
- Cooperate in school‑wide supervision during out‑of‑classroom activities.
- Participate in faculty or district committees and sponsor student activities.
Terms of Employment
9 months; salary and work year determined by the Board of Education.
Evaluation
Performance evaluated per Board policy for certified employees.

Responsibilities may include additional tasks assigned by the administrator/supervisor.
