Family and Consumer Science Teacher – Middle School –
Position Purpose
- Assumes professional responsibility for providing learning experiences in the Family and Consumer Sciences discipline and supervision of students in a supportive and positive climate that develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to meet and exceed the State Core Curriculum Content Standards using approved curricula, materials, and directives of the school.
- Works collaboratively with other members of the school staff and with parents as needed to achieve academic excellence.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Kansas Teacher’s Certificate (area-level endorsements preferred); ESOL endorsement preferred.
- Completed credential file meeting Topeka Public School standards.
- Professional verification of successful classroom teacher performance and/or student teaching experience.
- Evidence of willingness and ability to comply with ethical and professional performance standards established by the State Board of Education.
- Regular and predictable attendance is essential.
Physical/Emotional Requirements
- Walk, sit, talk, hear, stand, reach, and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
- Requires close, distance, and depth vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Interact with staff, meet demands from several people, and occasionally work extended hours.
Knowledge, Ability, and Skills
- Knowledge of child development, prescribed curriculum, current educational research, and current technology.
- Knowledge of learning styles and skill in using varied teaching methods.
- Skills in oral and written communication with students, parents, and others.
- Ability to plan and implement activities for maximum effectiveness and assess student achievement.
- Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision and work effectively with peers and administrators.
Performance Responsibilities
- Teach concepts and skills in foods and nutrition; clothing and textiles; home management; family relationships; and consumer education.
- Organize class activities to align preparation, instruction, and clean‑up within the allotted class time.
- Demonstrate techniques and prepare instructional aids and display materials to enhance learning.
- Instruct pupils in safe operation of equipment and appliances and encourage practice at home.
- Maintain current information on professional careers, modify instruction to meet individual student needs, and communicate high expectations.
- Seek, listen, and respond to suggestions, requests, and concerns; incorporate appropriate technology.
- Implement the district‑adopted curriculum and develop lesson plans using effective lesson design.
- Use a variety of research‑based instructional practices and current resources to support instructional goals.
- Model higher‑order thinking, problem solving, creativity, and flexibility through facilitation.
- Integrate informal and formal assessments into instruction and use assessment data to inform decisions.
- Assist students in developing self‑assessment skills and maintain up‑to‑date records of progress.
- Create a positive, inviting, and safe learning environment and establish behavioral standards.
- Develop and model procedures and routines; demonstrate conflict resolution skills and enthusiasm for teaching.
- Maintain confidentiality and use monitoring techniques to facilitate learning.
- Demonstrate knowledge of how subject matter and disciplines are integrated and organized; communicate effectively and promote positive interpersonal relationships.
- Create effective learning environments through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Administer group standardized tests according to district testing program; oversee out‑of‑classroom activities and supervise budgets.
- Support the District’s educational mission for all students and implement Board regulations and policies equitably.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the superintendent or designee.
Terms of Employment
- 9 months; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.
Evaluation
- Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board policy on evaluation of certified professional employees.
