Position OverviewThe Speech in Little Bilinguals Lab (SLBL) at KU is seeking a student hourly research assistant for an on-campus position starting Spring 2026. The SLBL is running a project focused on the speech and language development of 3-6 year old German‑English bilingual children. This role is ideal for students looking to gain hands‑on experience with research while using German language skills.
The position will involve supporting the preparation of testing materials, training on research testing, testing families bilingually, and coding the collected data. Testing includes various standardized speech and language assessments with children and interviews about language development with caregivers.
- 50% – Running research sessions bilingually in German and English
- 30% – Coding collected data (training is provided)
- 10% – Connecting with families to organize participation
- 10% – Miscellaneous testing and lab administration support
- Experience using spoken German as evidenced by application materials.
- Available to work both in‑person and virtually in Lawrence and Kansas City as stated and evidenced by application materials.
- Able to commit at least 10 hours per week as evidenced by application materials.
- Having a means of transportation to travel within and between the Kansas City metropolitan area and Lawrence as stated and evidenced by application materials.
- Weekend availability for testing and outreach events.
- Major in Speech‑Language‑Hearing (SPLH), Linguistics, Psychology, Education, Applied Behavioral Science, Anthropology, allied health fields, or a related field.
- Experience with Praat or IPA for transcribing speech.
- Experience working with children.
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must:
- (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or
- (2) be pre‑enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or
- (3) be enrolled in summer session or
- (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.
Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Employment Conditions- Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
- This is an hourly/non‑exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non‑exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
