Position: Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

Key Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Nursing reports to, and assists the Director of Nursing Services in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Service Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator and/or the Director of Nursing Services, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

The following is a general list of key job duties and responsibilities in your position. The list is not to be considered inclusive and you will be required to perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned by an authorized supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Comply with the Facility’s personnel, safety, and corporate policies and procedures.
  • Comply with the nursing department’s policies and procedures.
  • Report witnessed or reported allegations of resident abuse/neglect immediately to the Administrator/DON. Treat residents, family members, visitors, and team members with respect and dignity.
  • Timely completion of assigned in-service training assignments.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing Services in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department, in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director as necessary/required, concerning designated areas of operation of the nursing service department.
  • Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services, inside and outside the facility, to ensure the continuity of the residents’ total regimen of care.
  • Assist nursing with implementation and monitoring of policies, procedures and forms for use in Facility. Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator or Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate in developing, implementing, and periodically updating the resident’s written discharge plan. Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, and clinical programs etc., as necessary and as directed by the Director of Nursing.
  • In the absence of the Director, serve on, participate in, and attend various committees of the facility (i.e. Infection Control, Care Management Meetings, etc.).
  • Assist the Director in determining and meeting the staffing needs of the nursing service department.
  • Assist the Director in preparing performance evaluations as directed.
  • Make daily rounds for the nursing service department to ensure that all nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards. Report findings to the Director.
  • Assist with review and assist with resolution of complaints and grievances.
  • Assist the Director with departmental disciplinary action and ensure it is administered fairly and without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion, handicap, or marital status.
  • Encourage attending physicians to record and sign progress notes, physicians’ orders, etc., on a timely basis and in accordance with current regulations.
  • Review nursing documentation to ensure documentation is informative, inclusive and descriptive of the nursing care that is being provided. That documentation reflects the resident’s response to the care as outlined in the resident’s plan of care and that the plan is kept current.
  • The Assistant Director of Nursing will assist the Director of Nursing with specific oversight of certain systems, policies or programs as assigned by the Director.
