Position OverviewThe Security Officer at the University of Kansas is responsible for securing locks on buildings and rooms in academic and business facilities on various KU campuses. The officer patrols these facilities and the KU community, reporting security, maintenance, and code compliance problems. The role supports the KU Police Department in a non‑law enforcement capacity during emergencies and major events and requires extended walking and stair climbing.
Security officers receive a 1 % pay raise in the first full pay period after probation. The KU Police Department offers opportunities for promotion within the department.
Assignments include day or night shifts, weekends and holidays.

Job Description- 35% – Make regular inspection tours of assigned buildings, including walking long distances and climbing stairs. Complete inspections of assigned routes, check assigned buildings, report maintenance, code, and criminal/non‑criminal matters, ensure buildings are properly locked or unlocked, and monitor CCTV cameras if assigned.
- 20% – Safeguard the University against hazards, safety issues and property damage. Detect audible alarms and respond immediately, take appropriate action for unsafe conditions, assist in utility conservation, and report criminal or suspicious activity.
- 20% – Respond immediately and provide building access during emergency situations, assist in evacuation, perimeter control, and stand by until help arrives. May be assigned with little to no advance notice for special assignments.
- 5% – Complete and submit accurate activity logs, maintenance reports and timesheets, record detailed security information in a concise format.
- 5% – Remain knowledgeable of state fire codes, University safety guidelines, attend training, and assist in new personnel orientation or training.
- 5% – Maintain proper care and control of department equipment and vehicles, use radio techniques, and keep equipment in good repair.
- 5% – Perform security responsibilities at special events, including basketball and football games, and assignments across multiple campuses.
- 5% – Establish and maintain professional contact with University employees, residents and others, presenting a professional demeanor and well‑groomed appearance.
- U.S. citizen or non‑U.S. citizen legally able to perform the work in or for the United States, with required documentation if applicable.
- No diversions for or convictions of felonies and no serious misdemeanors.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must pass a thorough background check.
- Ability to perform all essential job functions and not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of self or others.
- High school diploma or completion of a G.E.D. equivalency.
- Experience in a post‑assigned security position.
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer.
