Sergeant - Fish & Game Game Wardens Department of Public Safety Hourly Wage: $34.79/Regular/Full-Time/Supervisory

Incumbent serves as a first-level supervisor of an assigned shift or unit. Is a sworn commissioned officer subject to a 24-hour on-call status. Employs knowledge of the procedures and techniques involved in carrying out police, conservation, and natural resource protection enforcement guidelines. Performs patrols both on and off the Yakama Reservation. Responds to emergencies, protects people & property, and promotes positive community relations.

Requires use of independent judgement and discretion during emergencies.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Performs duties & responsibilities in accordance with the Public Safety Department organizational chart and established chain of command.
  • Exhibit the ability to meet program goals and objectives; perform fish, wildlife, and natural resources duties; coordinate efforts with subordinates, other supervisors, police officers and fish/wildlife services in addition to partner agencies.
  • Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. Interviews suspects, witnesses, or victims to obtain descriptive information.
  • Investigates complaints, disturbances, or violations. Evaluates complaints and emergency information to determine response requirements.
  • Testifies in Court to present evidence or act as witness in criminal, traffic, and conservation cases.
  • Provides guidance and direction in conducting follow-up investigations.
  • Coordinates investigations involving multiple officers or agencies.
  • Coordinates with the Fisheries and Wildlife Programs in order to effectively lead/conduct/assign Patrols in the area of Columbia and Yakima Rivers (to include off reservation fisheries within the Yakama Nation's Treaty Territories).
  • Coordinates with Columbia River Inter-Tribal Police Department, State, Tribal and Federal Fish & Wildlife programs/Law Enforcement agencies as well as any non-governmental stake holders as recognized by the chain-of-command.
  • Responsible for Search and Rescue efforts.
  • Responds to calls for service and information; evaluates each and deploys officers accordingly.
  • Ensures departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures are followed.
  • Conducts internal investigations. Recommends disciplinary action, as warranted, initiates pursuant to existing codes or manuals.
  • Prepares monthly reports and reviews with immediate supervisor.
  • Thorough knowledge of YNPD Flex automated record management system to review/enter/retrieve incident reports, and thorough knowledge of the YN iSolved timecard processing.
  • Maintains communication with key command staff and criminal investigators on emergency situations, critical incidents, and important activities.
  • Regularly inspects equipment to ensure regular maintenance and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepares routine and specialized reports as requested.
  • Serves as a shift supervisor on a rotating basis to ensure coverage is provided 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
  • Conducts presentations and facilitates meetings or other forums as directed by immediate supervisor.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of Criminal Law, to include but not limited to, the Revised Yakama Code.
  • Knowledge, in general, of Federal and Tribal law as it relates to fishing and hunting in the Treaty Territories.
  • Through knowledge of types and use of technology, firearms, communication, and transportation equipment used in modern enforcement work.
  • Thorough knowledge of emergency search and rescue procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of court systems; rules and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan and prepare work schedules.
  • Ability to cope with stressful situations firmly, tactfully, and with respect to individual rights.
  • Skill in communicating, use of manpower and equipment to best meet the needs of program's goals and objectives in an economical and effective manner and dealing with the public.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, nights, overtime, and in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain physical fitness as evidenced by an annual physical examination; pass a Physical Efficiency Battery test (PEB).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Skill in the use and care of firearms; auxiliary weapons; equipment and emergency transportation vehicles.
  • Skill in administering first aid and CPR.
Minimum Requirements
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, AND 3-years prior work experience in law enforcement.
  • Possess certification of Basic Police Officer Training.
  • Required to have completed training for First Level Supervisor Certification and/or successfully pass within 6 months of appointment.
  • Required to maintain basic first aid and CPR card current.
  • Required to wear a department uniform.
  • Required to take annual physical and PEB training.
  • Minimum keyboarding/typing skill of 35 words per minute (wpm).
