1.0 Reading Specialist
LocationHoly Trinity Elementary, Torbay
Position SummaryFull time TERM position of Reading Specialist at Holy Trinity Elementary, Torbay. Duties to commence September 22, 2025 to June 26, 2026. This is a school-based position working collaboratively with NLSchools and school personnel to support responsive teaching and learning in literacy with a focus on reading. A reading specialist is a reflective, self-directed, lifelong learner, who will mentor teachers to improve efficacy in the teaching of reading.
ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with school personnel to promote student success in a safe and caring environment where engagement, equity and excellence are fostered. Mentor teachers to improve reading instruction and assessment, applying the 7 Determinants of the School Development Model:
Wellness and Positive Relationships;
Optimal Learning Environments;
Instructional Practice;
Assessment Practices;
Collective Efficacy;
Evidence-based Decision Making; and Teachers as Learners.
Skills and Abilities
- Current knowledge of research and evidence-based practices in reading instruction.
- Self-directed learner who engages in sustained professional learning.
- Demonstrated proficiency in evidence-based teaching and assessment of reading.
- Experience in collecting and analyzing evidence of student learning.
- Models, promotes, and uses responsive teaching to meet the needs of students who are experiencing difficulties and those who are very capable.
- Experience in creating and co-creating professional learning opportunities for school and educators.
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of professional learning models for educators.
- Leverages technology to promote equity in professional collaborative learning networks.
- Strong leadership skills enabling advocacy in literacy learning by establishing trusting relationships with students, teachers and families.
- Willingness to work in more than one school, if assigned.
- Primary/Elementary Undergraduate Degree.
- 5 years of successful teaching experience in K-6.
- Masters of Education (Reading/Literacy, Teaching and Learning) would be an asset.
- Equivalencies will be considered.
Annual Teacher Salary Scale contained within the NLTA Provincial Collective Agreement and benefits contained within the agreement.
