Financial Controller, Financial Reporting, Accounting & Finance, Accounting Manager
Job description:
This is a rare seat where you actually get to rebuild the work, not just keep it running. You will take full ownership of a complex, high-volume accounts payable function and a manual finance process that is wide open for automation, inside a privately held, fast-moving wireless retailer where the owners stay out of the way and reward people who take charge.
The person who last held this seat was promoted into the Controller role. That is the trajectory on offer here.
COMPANY
- Privately held wireless, telecom, retail company
- Owned by a small group of entrepreneurial owners who stay out of the day to day and want finance run by people who take initiative.
- Finance function led by a Controller who reports into the Director of Finance and interim CFO
- Complex, retail-style business with commissions, multi-channel sales, and reconciliation work that gives you real accounting depth.
- Recent internal promotion from this exact seat into the Controller role, so there is a proven path up.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
- Base salary of $85,000 to $95,000.
- 5% performance-based bonus.
- Hybrid model, three days per week onsite (North York, Yonge & Sheppard)
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant owns complex accounting areas and delivers an accurate P&L and balance sheet in a high-volume, multi-channel retail and e-commerce environment. This is a hands‑on, build-and‑improve role for someone who would rather automate a manual process than babysit it. You will work closely with FP&A, IT, inventory, and cross‑functional teams, and you will be given room to reshape how the work gets done.
- Month‑end close - Lead month‑end close for a high‑volume retail and e-commerce business, including journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and timely, accurate reporting.
- Accounts payable ownership - Take full ownership of accounts payable.
- Daily operations and cash - Support the Controller with day‑to‑day accounting and cash management
- Forecasting - Contribute to cash flow projections, budgeting, and ongoing forecasting.
- General ledger - Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts for accuracy, consistency, and proper mapping across cost centres.
- Controls and GAAP - Document processes, support policy design, manage the close schedule, and ensure GAAP and internal control compliance.
- Automation and process - Identify and implement automation and efficiency improvements, map end‑to‑end workflows, and standardize procedures.
- Systems and integration - Participate in system integration and drive enhancements across Microsoft Dynamics, POS, and e‑commerce platforms.
- Audit - Support the team through audit, which carries a meaningful amount of heavy lifting.
- Ad‑hoc - Provide analytical support and on‑demand reporting for business leaders, including insight into performance and operational drivers
- Minimum 5 years of Canadian accounting experience in month‑end close and financial reporting, within a high‑volume retail or e‑commerce environment, including inventory accounting, management reporting, and audit.
- CPA designation completed or actively in progress.
- Hands‑on Microsoft Dynamics experience and advanced Excel skills.
- Strong data and systems capability, including process mapping, automation tools, and cross‑platform integration across ERP, POS, e‑commerce, and payment processors.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- A proven record of taking manual processes and automating them. This role exists to modernize the work, so candidates who prefer to maintain a process as‑is will not enjoy it.
- Worth a close look: accountants from another wireless or telecom dealer in the Rogers, Bell, or Telus networks map almost directly onto this business.
- Personality fit: self‑directed, confident, and comfortable bringing suggestions and taking charge. You report to a direct, fast‑moving Controller who values people that hold their own and get to the point.
- Ownership. You take accounts payable end to end and get to automate a genuinely complex reconciliation process rather than just process invoices.
- Autonomy. The owners stay out of finance and reward people who bring ideas and take charge, so this is a build role, not a wait‑for‑direction role.
- Career growth. The last person in this seat was promoted into the Controller role, so the upward path is real and recent, not theoretical.
- Visible impact.Because the function is largely manual today, the improvements you make land fast and are seen by the people who matter.
- Real complexity. An 82‑store dealer gives you commission, reconciliation, and multi‑channel depth that is hard to build anywhere else.
- Direct access. You work shoulder to shoulder with the Controller and have exposure to ownership in a small, privately held business.
