PositionSummary
Gilbert & Larkin LLP is seeking a Staff Accountant / Tax Accountant to join our team in Bracebridge. This role is ideal for an experienced public practice professional who is comfortable managing a broad range of accounting and tax files and supporting client relationships in either an accounting-focused or tax-focused capacity. The successful candidate will bring strong technical knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small firm environment.
This position is well suited to someone whose experience is stronger in either tax or accounting, with the opportunity to contribute across both areas depending on background and firm needs.
- Prepare and review year‑end working papers and financial statements for corporations, sole proprietor ships, and other entities
- Prepare and review corporate, personal, and trust income tax returns
- Assist with or lead review engagement files, depending on experience
- Assist with bookkeeping, account reconciliations, and preparation of adjusting entries where required
- Prepare and review GST/HST returns, payroll remittances, and other government filings
- Communicate directly with clients to obtain information, respond to inquiries, and support ongoing client relationships
- Assist with tax planning, tax reorganizations, and other advisory engagements
- Liaise with the Canada Revenue Agency and other government authorities where appropriate
- Maintain organized and accurate client files and documentation
- Support partners and other team members on a variety of accounting and tax engagements
- Provide guidance and support to junior team members as needed
- Diploma or degree in accounting, commerce, or a related field
- CPA designation considered an asset
- Experience in public accounting, ideally in a small or mid‑sized firm setting
- Strong experience preparing and reviewing personal and corporate tax returns, year‑end files, or both
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and Canadian tax compliance requirements
- Experience managing files independently and balancing multiple deadlines
- Proficiency with accounting and tax software
- Strong Microsoft Excel and general computer skills
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Some experience with tax reorganizations
- Completion of, or interest in, the CPA In-Depth Tax Course
- Some experience working with owner‑managed businesses and private corporations
- Some experience with review engagements
- Some understanding of ASPE
- Experience mentoring or reviewing the work of junior staff
