Position Summary

The Senior Accountant supports the organization’s accounting, financial reporting, funder reporting, compliance, and internal control functions. Working closely with the Senior Manager of Finance, the role is responsible for monthly and year-end accounting processes, reconciliations, budget-to-actual reporting, funder financial reports, audit preparation, and financial analysis to support effective decision-making across the organization.

The Senior Accountant also supports accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, cash flow monitoring, and compliance with funding agreements, organizational policies, and applicable legislative requirements. This role provides guidance to finance team members, supports process improvements, and helps ensure accurate, timely, and transparent financial information for management, funders, auditors, and the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and support day-to-day, monthly, quarterly, and year-end accounting processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, and audit preparation. Financial reporting such as keeping accurate files of funding contracts and following up on contracts not received; preparing reports for managers to send to the funders (monthly, quarterly, annually, as required) in the format required by the funders; assisting in setting up the appropriate expected accounts receivable and deferred revenue for each funding contract;

    preparing analysis of actual to budget of specific expenses or revenue if requested by program managers.
  • Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions and ensure integrity of all postings, resolving escalated issues with clients, vendors, and funders.
  • Monitor cash flow and support efficient management of financial resources, including implementing internal processes, controls, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Complete monthly closings, reconciliations, and preparation of financial reports (e.g., budget vs actuals, forecasts, general ledger details) for managers, Directors, and Board of Directors.
  • Analyze budget variances and balance sheet accounts and provide financial information to support organizational decision-making.
  • Track funding and ensure compliance with funding agreements and legislative requirements, assist with EHT, HST, tax filings and tax receipts.
  • Review other finance team members’ work, provide guidance and training, support daily workflow and foster teamwork and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to system implementations and operational improvements and provide backup coverage for finance staff, including the Senior Manager.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality in all aspects of work performance.
  • Advise Senior Manager of Finance in a timely manner of significant problems or delays encountered during the performance of the work.
  • Perform special projects or analysis for other related duties as required.
  • Participate in accreditation process and annual financial audit.
  • Perform other duties that are consistent with this role as required.
Job Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in finance, business, or related field.
  • CPA accounting designation or working towards.
  • A minimum of 4 years of not-for-profit accounting and finance experience.
  • Experience with not-for-profit fund accounting, grant reporting, and restricted funding.
  • Knowledge of CRA charitable reporting, HST rebates, EHT, and funder compliance requirements.
  • In-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), concepts, and best practices.
