Position Summary
The IRI Technician is a field-based role responsible for measuring pavement smoothness and supporting quality assurance on active roadway construction projects. This position operates specialized IRI data collection equipment, including an instrumented vehicle, to assess newly paved surfaces and ensure compliance with project specifications.
Working closely with paving crews, contractors, and internal teams, the IRI Technician coordinates field testing activities, collects and validates data, and contributes to project acceptance and reporting. This role requires a high degree of independence, strong communication skills, and flexibility to travel extensively across Ontario, with occasional out-of-province assignments.
This role is best suited for an individual who is comfortable with a travel-intensive work environment and dynamic, field-driven schedules.
Responsibilities- Operate and calibrate IRI data collection equipment and vehicle
- Conduct pavement smoothness testing on active paving sites
- Coordinate with contractors and crews to schedule and perform testing
- Support paving operations (through efficient collection and analysis of data)
- Collect, validate, and document QC data for reporting and invoicing support
- Identify and escalate deficiencies or non-conformance issues
- Maintain compliance with safety standards and procedures
- Valid G driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract, and ability to drive long distances regularly
- Strong verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical requirements to field crews and contractors
- Ability to work independently in a field-based environment with minimal supervision
- Willingness to travel extensively (75%+), including across Ontario and occasional out-of-province travel
- Flexibility to work day and night shifts, with occasional weekend work and short-notice schedule changes
- Ability to lift and handle equipment up to 50–60 lbs
- Experience or familiarity with roadway construction, paving operations, materials testing, or QA practices is considered an asset
- Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, or a related field is an asset
- Experience working on Ministry of Transportation or municipal infrastructure projects is an asset
- Basic computer skills for data entry, reporting, and QC documentation
$24.00 - $26.00 per hour
