Senior Estimator

Job Description

Insight Global is looking for a Senior Estimator to join a large rail-infrastructure project. This individual will sit within the Track Alliance and play a key role in developing accurate, detailed, and defensible estimates for complex rail, track, and heavy civil infrastructure scopes.

This is a highly technical and collaborative environment where communication, analytical ability, and large-scale infrastructure experience are critical. The ideal candidate will have strong hands‑on estimating experience, a background in heavy civil or rail/track work, and the ability to lead and mentor a small team while still executing technical estimating work themselves.

The Senior Estimator will be responsible for reviewing drawings, tender documents, design models, and project scope to understand what needs to be priced across rail/track and civil infrastructure packages. They will develop detailed quantities, bills of quantities, material pricing, labour rates, equipment requirements, crew assumptions, and cost models to support project estimates.

This role will be approximately 50% hands‑on estimating/modelling and 50% leadership, review, and coordination. They will lead or mentor one to two estimators, review estimating work, help establish estimating guidelines, and work closely with project managers, design teams, construction teams, executives, subcontractors, and suppliers to validate assumptions and ensure estimates are accurate and aligned to project objectives.

• 10+ years of hands‑on construction estimating experience.
• Strong experience estimating large‑scale infrastructure projects, ideally within rail, track, transit, or heavy civil construction.
• Experience working in a major contractor, joint venture, or large infrastructure project environment.
• Strong ability to read and interpret complex construction drawings, blueprints, tender documents, and scope packages.
• Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, Power Query, cost models, and detailed reporting.
• Experience developing BOQs, material price lists, labour costs, equipment requirements, crew assumptions, and detailed estimate backups.
• Experience using Bluebeam or similar software for takeoffs and quantity development.
• Experience with Hard dollar or similar software.
• Experience with Visio or PowerPoint for presentations.
• Strong analytical and mathematical skills with high attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical estimating assumptions clearly to internal teams, clients, and stakeholders.
• Leadership experience or the ability to mentor and review the work of one to two estimators. Specific experience within track estimating.
