Search Labs is working on behalf of an established Canadian consulting engineering firm to recruit an experienced Mechanical & Electrical Construction Inspector
.
This is a field-focused position for someone who understands how mechanical and electrical building systems are installed, tested, coordinated, and completed in an active construction environment.
The successful candidate will conduct site inspections and field reviews on projects across Canada, helping ensure that installed work generally conforms to the engineering drawings, specifications, approved shop drawings, and intended design.
This opportunity may suit someone from a mechanical or electrical contractor, skilled trades, commissioning, construction administration, inspection, or consulting engineering background. A practical understanding of construction and the ability to communicate effectively with contractors and trades will be more important than following one specific career path.
The RoleWorking with the firm’s engineering and project teams, you will manage inspections across a varied portfolio of approximately 20–30 active projects.
The portfolio includes projects of different sizes and duration. Some assignments may involve recurring inspections throughout construction, while others may require only one or two site visits.
Projects may include:
- Retail stores and shopping centres
- Grocery and food-store environments
- Commercial buildings
- Offices and tenant improvements
- Warehouses and distribution centres
- Refrigerated or temperature-controlled spaces
- Multi-location construction and renovation programs
- Conduct mechanical and electrical construction inspections and field reviews.
- Review installed work for general conformity with the project drawings, specifications, approved shop drawings, and applicable requirements.
- Inspect mechanical systems such as HVAC, plumbing, drainage, refrigeration, controls, fire protection, and associated equipment.
- Inspect electrical systems such as power distribution, lighting, emergency power, fire alarm, communications, security, and associated equipment.
- Identify incomplete, deficient, improperly coordinated, or non-conforming work.
- Prepare clear and timely field-review reports, including photographs, observations, deficiencies, and required follow-up.
- Communicate directly with general contractors, site superintendents, mechanical and electrical subcontractors, tradespeople, suppliers, clients, and consultants.
- Coordinate technical questions and site conditions with the firm’s engineers and designers.
- Monitor the progress and quality of mechanical and electrical installations.
- Participate in deficiency reviews, testing, commissioning, occupancy, substantial-performance, and project-closeout activities.
- Confirm that deficiencies have been addressed and document outstanding items.
- Organize site visits, reporting requirements, deficiencies, and follow-up activities across multiple active projects.
- Represent the consulting engineering firm professionally and constructively at project sites.
This role requires regular travel to project sites across Canada.
Depending on project activity, the Inspector should generally expect:
- Air travel approximately once per week.
- Some periods with only one or two overnight trips per month.
- Regular local and regional travel within Ontario.
- Occasional early-morning, evening, or off-hours visits based on construction schedules.
- Independent coordination of travel, site access, inspections, and reporting deadlines.
Candidates must be comfortable with frequent travel and managing a geographically dispersed project portfolio.
