ONxpress is seeking a Safety Advisor – Construction Training to support and strengthen our safety culture by delivering engaging safety training programs while leveraging hands-on field experience from heavy civil and rail construction environments. This position is primarily office-based and training-focused but requires a strong understanding of site safety operations, hazard management, and regulatory compliance gained through practical field experience.
- Facilitate Health, Safety, and Security (HSS) training programs in both classroom and virtual settings.
- Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement through all training initiatives.
- Develop, review, and update training materials, lesson plans, practical evaluations, and written assessments.
- Work closely with construction, operations, and project teams to identify training needs and determine appropriate delivery methods.
- Support the development and implementation of safety orientation programs, toolbox talks, and targeted safety awareness initiatives.
- Participate in training review sessions to capture lessons learned and identify opportunities for program enhancement.
- Track training effectiveness through metrics and feedback, driving continuous improvement of training programs.
- Provide subject matter expertise based on construction site safety experience to ensure training content reflects real-world hazards, risks, and best practices.
- Conduct hazard assessments and support the identification and mitigation of health and safety risks.
- Assist with site inspections, audits, and compliance reviews to identify trends and training opportunities.
- Support incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and root cause analysis, incorporating findings into training and awareness programs.
- Collaborate with project managers, supervisors, and safety teams to support implementation of Health and Safety plans.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, industry standards, and company safety requirements.
- Support ongoing safety initiatives and special projects as required.
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Management, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in a Health & Safety role within heavy civil, infrastructure, rail, or construction environments.
- Previous experience conducting safety training, facilitation, coaching, or mentorship activities is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Canada Labour Code, CSA Standards, and related legislation.
- Experience conducting site inspections, hazard assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
- Understanding of construction safety practices, risk management, and safety program implementation.
- Experience working on rail or transportation infrastructure projects is considered an asset.
- NCSO designation (completed or in progress) is considered an asset.
- Health and Safety certifications such as Working at Heights, WHMIS, Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), Train-the-Trainer, or similar certifications are considered assets.
- Excellent presentation, facilitation, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and influence employees at all levels of the organization.
- Strong computer and systems skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
