  • Lead four Southwestern Ontario teams in Windsor, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Hamilton, including the Niagara Region bureau
  • Drive local editorial strategy for the stations
  • Develop, implement, and oversee objectives with measurable outcomes
  • Oversee local daily news, pilots, live and on-demand coverage, community outreach, and news specials
  • Collaborate with CBC leaders and units across the country
  • Build meaningful relationships with new audiences, including the 35–49 demographic
  • Lead change and adapt station work to evolving community needs
  • Hire, inspire, mentor, support, and develop staff
  • Ensure journalistic standards are met and content is fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, and intelligent
  • Address non-journalism issues with other departments, including maintenance, security, and technical matters
  • Provide daily and project-based editorial leadership
  • Work with legal teams when required
  • Develop local partnerships and community outreach strategies
  • Build connections between local teams and colleagues across Canada
  • Answer complaints to the CBC Ombudsman
  • Track costs and follow budgets with finance staff
  • Support staff training and development
  • Troubleshoot station site issues with executive producers
  • Travel to stations as required
  • Manage special programming, including town halls, forums, specials, holiday events, enterprise series, and investigative projects
  • Monitor published content for accuracy, immediacy, and integrity
  • Manage editorial matters, HR, financial resources, and budgets
Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of related leadership experience, including newsroom leadership

  • Experience applying journalistic standards and practices in a daily newsroom
  • Understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices
  • Knowledge of law relating to broadcasting, digital media, and journalism
  • Strong understanding of media trends and implications for CBC News and local journalism
  • Ability to make rapid, frequent decisions under tight deadlines
  • Experience leading a news team during major breaking-news events
  • Experience hiring and supporting new staff in a journalism setting
  • Experience with video and/or audio storytellingli>
  • Experience managing teams remotely
  • English and French reading, speaking, and writing skills
  • Must travel to stations as required
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing
